Obituary

David “Dave” Carlson, 76, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the VA Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, SD, after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 9, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

David Leonard Carlson was born December 28, 1948, to Vernon and Katherine (Young) Carlson of Sioux Falls, SD. He attended school in Sioux Falls, where he was on the track and field and wrestling teams and graduated from Washington High School in 1967. While in Sioux Falls, he earned 1st place in the Billiard Marathon, temporarily holding the record for playing billiards for 75 hours straight.

After graduating from high school, Dave joined the US Army, where he served two tours in Vietnam as a member of Company “D”, 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 9th Infantry Division, and earned the rank of SP6 (Specialist 6th Class/Staff Sergeant). Among many things, his duties included serving as a mess sergeant, where he honed his cooking skills that he would share with others throughout his life. His accomplishments included earning the following in the line of duty: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and Bronze Star Medal. He later served in the SD Army National Guard. His love for his country never wavered, and he was a lifelong patriot and a member of the American Legion. When told, “Thank you for your service,” he always replied, “It was my honor and my pleasure.”

After his time in the Army, Dave’s sense of adventure led him to spend over a year traveling in Southeast Asia and living life to the fullest and working in Australia, immersing himself in the outdoors, culture, and friendships.

Dave married Linda Adkins on September 6, 1974, in Sioux Falls, SD, where they started their marriage and adventure of over 50 years together. In 1976, they moved to Windom, MN, and in 1983, they moved to Mitchell, SD. In addition to raising a family, they enjoyed traveling, attending concerts, evenings on the patio, and some friendly competition playing Yahtzee. Their adventures included many roadtrips, cruises in the Caribbean, sightseeing in the UK and Ireland, and staying in a beach bungalow in Belize - all filled with love, laughter, new experiences, and memories to last a lifetime.

Dave’s career started in construction in Sioux Falls, but he was best known for running Erickson Freedom stores in Windom, MN, and in Mitchell, SD, and being a product specialist and a familiar face at the Cabela’s store in Mitchell since they opened in 2000. No matter the size of the task or the countless hours it took, Dave always gave it 110% and took pride in his work, making many friends along the way. As anyone who has had the experience of engaging with him at the stores knows, it was not just a job - it was a part of him. He was passionate about customer service, creating a “Cheers”-like environment, mentoring staff, and everything outdoors, and it showed. Beyond that, he would light up when he had the chance to share his wealth of knowledge and tales of his personal experiences with customers, helping them find not only what they needed for their next adventure but also some of that childlike excitement that he had.

A lifelong, avid outdoorsman, Dave loved trapping, fishing, hunting, and camping on his own or with friends, family, and his beloved dogs. His love of the outdoors drove him to embrace new experiences outside of just local hunting and fishing, including everything from hunting in Australia to fishing in Alaska and Canada to camping and hiking with the Boy Scouts at Philmont Ranch (Cimarron, NM), to name a few. He was also instrumental in starting The Lake Mitchell Bassmasters Bass Club in 1985 and was a member of many outdoor organizations over the years, such as The Davison County Sportsman's Club, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation. He never hesitated to help organize fishing tournaments, serve on committees, or volunteer at events.

Dave was a bright light and a blessing to so many, and he will never be forgotten.

He is survived by: his wife - Linda; his three children - Lung (Tammy) Le, Anna (Donovan) Prostrollo, and Michael (Brooke) Carlson; five grandchildren - Ethanson and Angelina Le and Ethan, Aidan, and Elizabeth Carlson; one brother - Tim (De Anna) Carlson; two sisters - Esther Holland and Marla (Gregg) Burtis; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews.

Dave was preceded in death by: his parents - Vernon and Katherine Carlson; his father- and mother-in-law - Jim and Margy (Thom) Adkins; and his brothers-in-law - Donald, Paul, and David Adkins.

I met Dave when he was managing the Freedom station in Windom. Throughout our talks he took me bass fishing for my first time. Wow that made a life long addiction to Bass Fishing for me. After he left Windom myself and two buddies (Wayne Carlson & Bobby Hanson) started a club in Windom. Both Bobby and Wayne are now fishing with Dave in Heaven. On a few occasions I stopped in at Cabela's to say hi. I'll never forget this awesome man.

David will be missed greatly by anyone who ever knew him, he was a great brother-in-law. His hospitality on any given visit to SD will always be remembered. No matter the time we got going in the morning on days we visited I always knew that Dave would have my breakfast made and ready to eat on any given day. He was a great cook and I always enjoyed talking to him and listening to his adventures over the years. He was most generous in sharing Linda's time with me when both Tom and Garry passed away several years ago. She was my rock
and helped me get through some rough times.
Dave, I will always remember the talks we had.

Heaven indeed gained an Angle!! ❤️❤️

I was, and still am, a close friend of Dave’s brother Tim. I’ll always remember Dave as and avid outdoorsman that included me in some of his trapping adventures, and his deep voice was
Unmistakable.
He will be missed by everyone that he crossed paths with during his time on this earth. May he rest in eternal peace.

Met Dave through the Mitchell bass club. I fished with him on several occasions during many tournaments and he was always a joy to have in the boat. Always went to Ericksons gas station when he was the manager for morning coffee. I’ll always remember the two trips to Texas bass fishing with him and several bass club members. We always enjoyed conversations with him anytime we went to Cabela’s. I always enjoyed the stories he told of all his travels abroad and while in the service. He will be missed. Our condolences to Linda, Anna & Micheal & families.

Linda and family, I am so sorry to hear the news of Dave's passing. I have so many good memories of him at Erickson's, calling me to settle a bet on a legal question about some outdated, and seldom used, hunting or fishing law. He was a truly great Sportsman, Patriot, husband and father. Although we didn't see each other very often anymore, I always looked forward to our visits when we did. Prayers to you and your family, Linda!

My sincere sympathy to Linda and family. I first got to know Dave (& Linda) back in the Freedom station days. I so enjoyed visiting with him as he always was such a nice, kind man. As the years went by we all would still stop and visit with each other. Always good conversations about hunting dogs, his Brittany Springers ours English Springers. Was glad to see him
and Linda about a month ago at the clinic, not the ideal place, but was glad to see him. Rest in peace dear Dave. "Huntin' Fishin' and Lovin' Every Day" You will be missed. Prayers to All.

Dave is the epitome of a man He volunteered to represent our country via the military during the Vietnam war! A true American hero! When others tucked tail and ran, he stepped up. I worked with Dave shoulder to shoulder for 14 years and it was a blessing! I hunted, fished, camped and drank a few beers with him on a regular basis and I am grateful for the times we had! Thank you Dave!

Dave and his girls, Abby and Penny, were customers of Golden Penny Kennels since we began the business. Dave and my husband, Brett, enjoyed visiting about hunting and dogs or just about anything. When Dave arrived to drop off the dogs, I always knew it would be at least an hour before Brett came back in. Brett will miss those conversations.
Dave often brought the dogs’ food in a Christmas popcorn tin and his beard had gotten whiter over the years. And he would bring the dogs to us over Christmas while visiting family. This was all evidence to our youngest daughter that Dave was Santa Claus! Brett told Dave that one time and he thought it was great.

We hope the hunting grounds are prosperous and you and your pups are having a great time.

It is hard to believe that my next door neighbor of 38 years is gone. Any season of the year, I would see Dave outside walking his dogs "in the back 40". I am so very thankful that Dave and I had our final conversation just a week or so ago as he was sitting out in the back yard, getting some sun. South Harmon will never be the same for me. My prayers to you Linda. I will always be available for you if you need help of any kind. My prayers are with you.

We had the honor of being Dave’s next door neighbor for 19 years. We loved our “over the fence” visits and his genuine kindness and compassion for others. He was a great story teller and we continued to enjoy those stories when we would see him at Cabelas. He had a deep love and respect for anything outdoors along with the greatest laugh and kindest smile. Linda, Anna, and Micheal, you have our deepest sympathy. I will always cherish our friendship and times on South Harmon. Sending you our love during this heartbreaking time.
