Darlene Marie Hohn was born February 25, 1935 to Harold and Marie (Goldammer) Uptagrafft in Mitchell, SD. She attended Country School, Plano Consolidated School, and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1953.
Darlene married Wilibrd Hohn at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell on February 18, 1954. Darlene was the proud mother of eleven children. She and her husband Wilibrd worked faithfully on the farm west of Ethan, SD, to provide for their children. Despite her large family, Darlene always made time to care for and help others genuinely. (Often called "Ma Hohn" in the Ethan Community) She provided unconditional support and love for her family, neighbors, and friends. She had a great sense of humor and offered wise support and faith-filled advice. She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Church in Dimock, and served as a Catechism teacher (when her kids were younger) and as an Altar Society member. Darlene and Wilibrd enjoyed attending church, dancing, and meeting couples at the Elks Lodge and dance halls. The love that Wilibrd and Darlene displayed for their 68 years of marriage was impeccable.
Darlene was a remarkable cook and baker. She was known for her delicious homemade bread, rolls, pies, and buns. Darlene enjoyed preparing meals for her family and those that helped on the farm. She found joy in sewing, playing basketball, softball, crosswords, puzzles, and reading magazines. Darlene loved shopping in Mitchell and often came home with several items, such as clothes and stuffed animals, that she felt bad for sitting on the shelf or hanging all alone. Most were missing an eye, squashed face, or "imperfect." A prime example of her unconditional love for all, it even led to non-living items. Darlene loved being surrounded by her family, talking to them on the phone and playing cards. Darlene and Wilibrd enjoyed watching game shows. She could compete with the best of the best contestants.
Darlene was very proud of the family she and Wilibrd created. Darlene left a powerful impression while on earth, and her legacy will forever be in the hearts of all who knew her. Well done faithful servant!
