Daniel McCloud, 71, of Mitchell, SD, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, December 17, 2023. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, December 22, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Daniel McCloud Jr. was born March 10th, 1952 in Sioux City, IA to Dan Sr. and Peggy (Law) McCloud. They later moved to Yankton, SD where Dan Sr. taught the family the trade of Lindsay water softening, a trade that Dan Jr. later started in Mitchell, SD with his wife Chauna. They ran Dan’s Water Service for over 35 years. He was a proud father of three daughters: Melissa, Kaela, and Danna.
Dan was a competitive sportsman with the Mitchell Trap League for many years, sponsoring his own teams and shooting on many others. He was well-known for his marksmanship not only competitively, but also while hunting. He was part of the Rodeo Committee for many years, following his passion to be a cowboy and supporting his daughters’ love of horses. Dan also took great pride in decorating the Corn Palace for 17 years. He was a driven man who worked harder than anyone else, first up and last down his whole life. He loved all the kids who worked with him at the Corn Palace and kept in touch with many of them even after he retired.
Dan ran like his cars, fast and loud. He was a founding member of the 301 Rodz, a local car enthusiast club. He loved rebuilding cars and made his own fleet of hot rods. He enjoyed meeting up with family and friends in Marion, SD for a test and tune run. The only time Dan stopped working was for family, he would sneak the grandkids into the shop for a bag of chips and a carrot for them to feed to the ponies.
He is survived by his wife, Chauna; daughters, Melissa (Shane) Sundleaf of Yankton, SD, Kaela (Seth) McCloud and Danna (Rory) Kolbeck of Mitchell, SD; grandchildren: Mason, Morgan, Luca, Meryl, and Baby; siblings, Rodney, Gerri (George), David (Jolene), and Jacki; and his nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Dan Sr., mother Peggy, and brother Chris.
