Dale A. Magnuson, 89, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 13, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service.
Dale Albert Magnuson was born January 6, 1935, to Albert and Barbara (Koppert) Magnuson in Howard, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Agatha Church in Howard, SD. Dale attended school at St. Agatha, and joined the US Navy at the age of 17. He was stationed on the USS Essex Carrier during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1955.
On September 7, 1956, Dale was united in marriage to Shirley Foos, and to this union, five children were born.
Dale worked for various farms, and went to trade school for welding. He then went on to work for Sheesley’s for a short period and Sanders Inc. in Sioux Falls. In 1970, the family moved to Mitchell, where Dale began his employment with Dakota Pump Inc., until retiring after 38 years.
Dale was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, and was a color guard commander for over 20 years.
Dale is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Anthony, Todd (Patty), and Troy, all of Mitchell, SD; daughters, Cathy Allen of Spencer, SD and Carla (Tom) Wittstruck of Ethan, SD; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Eileen, Lucille, Elna, and Anita; brother, Virgil; son-in-law, Wallace Allen; daughter-in-law, Ginny Magnuson; and several nieces and nephews.
