Curtis Schrank, 64, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell after being diagnosed in March 2024 with stage IV esophageal cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 14, at Bittner Funeral Chapel, with visitation one hour prior to the funeral service.
Curtis Gene Schrank was born July 20, 1960, in Parkston, SD to Kenneth and Clara Schrank. He was the eighth of their ten children. He was baptized on August 28, 1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Dimock, SD. He was confirmed September 25, 1977 at First Lutheran Church Mitchell, SD; he was accepted into membership.
Curtis graduated from Mitchell Senior High School and Mitchell Vo-Tech in 1978 with a welding degree. He worked as a Custodian at the Holiday Inn in Mitchell for two years. He moved on to work at Owatonna Manufacturing, Thermoset Plastics, and Twin City Fan all in same location for 40 years. He became disabled and retired in 2020.
Curtis was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, hunting and camping. He loved spending time at special occasions with family because he knew playing cards was involved. From Pitch to Pinochle and Canasta, he enjoyed them all and always had fun exclamations of his card hands and the games.
Curtis never married or had children, but he was a doting uncle to his 22 nieces and nephews and attended all of their milestone events and cheered and celebrated their achievements. He also taught many of his nieces and nephews how to fish and hunt.
Curtis is survived by one brother, Steven (Norma) Schrank of Mitchell; two sisters, Julie (Richard) Gustad of Platte and Dawn Miller of Aberdeen; brother-in-law, Charles Mentele; sisters-in-law, Susan Schrank and Sherri (Joseph) Schrank-Johnson; along with 20 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his four brothers, Larry Schrank, Harvey Schrank, Bryan Schrank, and Garland Schrank; two sisters Janice Mentele and Barbara Tietz; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Schrank and Janelle Schrank; brother-in-law, Wayne Tietz; and nephews, Christopher Gustad and Matthew Tietz.
Curtis will now join his parents and family in heaven for a grand celebration!! All are greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
