Obituary

Corinne Ligtenberg, 88, of Rapid City, SD, formerly of Mitchell, passed away peacefully Monday, January 13, 2025, following a long journey with Alzheimers. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 23, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Corinne Joyce Ligtenberg was born in Harrison, SD in 1936, the daughter of Henry and Ada (DeWaard) Korevaar. She moved with her family to Lynden, WA in 1941. After high school, she worked as a licensed practical nurse. While vacationing to South Dakota in 1958, she met her beloved husband, LeRoy, and they were wed in 1959.

The couple made their home in South Dakota. Corinne embraced her role as a homemaker with joy and dedication. She created a warm and nurturing environment for her family where love and faith flourished. Corinne’s home was a place of comfort, filled with delicious meals and the spirit of togetherness.  The grandkids couldn’t wait to enjoy her cooking and baked treats when they came to visit.

Mitchell was her home with LeRoy for more than 47 years. Corinne was a dedicated member of the First Reformed Church in Mitchell, where she found strength and peace in her beliefs. She shared her faith through many years of teaching Sunday school. Corinne and LeRoy had many cherished memories of their years with family and friends in the Corsica, Fedora, and Mitchell communities.

Corinne’s faith was the foundation of her life. Her gentle, quiet demeanor and humble spirit will be fondly remembered by those who knew her. She was an avid reader, whether it was the Bible, a fiction book, or the encyclopedia.  She spent countless hours reading books to her grandchildren. She had a vast vocabulary and could be quite the competitor in a game of Scrabble. She loved playing games with friends and family.

Corinne’s daughters lovingly remember her unwavering faith, her pure enjoyment in listening to her lifelong cherished hymns (tapping her fingers to the beat) and her love for her family. Near the end of her journey with Alzheimer’s, listening to hymns was one of the things she would still respond to.

Corinne is survived by her children, Marlys (David) Janisch of Eagan MN, Linda (Larry) Mader of Spearfish SD, Rhonda (Greg) Moen of Cape Coral FL, and Renee (Kevin) Eggebraaten of Rapid City SD; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Arla Baker of Sioux Falls; and brother-in-law, Eugene (Leola) Ligtenberg of Rapid City.

Corinne was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy in December 2021; parents, Henry (1957) and Ada (1943) Korevaar; step-mother, Kate (Van Der Werff) Korevaar; sisters, Nell (Bud) Heeringa and Ann (Adrian) Vander Griend; brother, Arlo (Ann) Korevaar; and grandsons, Mark and Matthew Janisch.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Village at Skyline Pines in Rapid City for their loving and compassionate care.

We lived next door to Corinne and LeRoy. They were the best neighbors. LeRoy would always tell us a joke. Corinne was so kind to us. She always gave cookies to my granddaughters!! They loved her!!
