Charles R. Kobes Sr. was born October 26, 1950, to Robert and Edmonia (Greene) Kobes in Mitchell, SD at St. Joseph hospital. Charlie graduated from MHS (Mitchell High School) in 1968. After high school, Charlie enlisted in the US Navy. He served from 1968 to 1972, and served three of the years in Vietnam. After his active duty, Charlie continued his service in the National Guard.
Charlie was united in marriage to Wanda (Strand) Kobes on February 26, 1977, after 4 months of dating, and to this union was children, Karlie, Kristie, Charlie “Chuck” Jr., and Natalie.
Charlie worked at Mitchell Concrete, Commercial Bank for 20 years, and then the DOT for 10 years before retiring.
Charlie was active in the local car show community, Outkast Club. He enjoyed taking his mistress (his 1969 Chevy Chevelle) to many car shows. He loved tinkering in the garage with woodworking, welding, etc.; you name he’d fix or build it. He enjoyed being an outdoors man camping, fishing, hunting, and boating. Most of all he loved spending time with family, especially attending his grandkids’ sporting events. Charlie always had a joke and was never afraid to speak his mind. He loved his food and was not afraid to tell you if it wasn’t very good.
Charlie is survived by his lovely wife, Wanda; daughters, Karlie Kobes, Kristie (Victor Sr.) Contreras, and Natalie Kobes; son, Charlie “Chuck” Jr. (Steph) Kobes; grandchildren, Ahnna, Kaden, Victor Jr. Riley, Peyton, Tyson, Avery, Kameron, and Wyatt; brother, Larry (Colleen) Kobes of Minot, ND; and his four legged companion service dog, Mia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Pat and Karen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
