Betty Joan Hegge was born on February 2, 1955, to Joseph and Cecelia (Schmitz) Schwaller in Gregory, SD. Betty attended Gregory public schools until her high school graduation in 1973. A few years later while working at a grocery store in Brandon, SD, Betty was introduced to the love of her life, Craig Hegge, a connection that quickly grew into a deep and steady love. Together they built a partnership rooted in devotion, humor, and shared purpose, marrying on June 19, 1976, and beginning a journey that would span five remarkable decades. Betty and Craig’s love expanded when they chose to grow their family through adoption, welcoming their two daughters, Emily and Krista, into their lives. Betty was later blessed with three grandsons, Bryce, Kaden, and Damien Charles. Betty lived a life defined by compassion, gentle strength, and a warmth that made every person feel like family.
Betty found joy in a variety of creative and outdoor pursuits that reflected her warm and industrious spirit. She loved sewing, crafting beautiful pieces stitched with care; gardening, where she nurtured vibrant flowers and thriving plants; and camping, enjoying the peace and adventure of the outdoors with family and friends. These hobbies brought her happiness and became cherished parts of her daily life.
Betty is survived by her loving family: husband, Craig Hegge; daughters, Emily and Krista Hegge; grandsons, Bryce, Kaden, and Damien Charles; sister, Linda (Marvin) Sharkey; sisters-in-law, Carla (Evan) Watson, Dawn (John) Elsinger, and Rose (John) Schwaller; brother-in-law, Dennis (Deborah) Arnold; and numerous nieces and nephews who will forever carry the memory of her gentle guidance, unwavering love, and the countless moments of joy they shared.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Cecelia (Schmitz) Schwaller; brothers, John and Mike Schwaller; sisters, Judy Geaghan and Deborah Arnold; parents-in-law, Clifford and Delores Hegge; sister-in-law, Deborah Frederick; and brother-in-law, Joseph Geaghan.
Though she is no longer with us, Betty’s light remains—carried in our hearts, reflected in our memories, and present in every act of love inspired by her life.
