Obituary

Betty Carman, 91, of Kimball, SD, died Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Sanford Chamberlain Medical Center in Chamberlain, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 5, at Kimball Protestant Parish in Kimball. Burial will be at Kimball Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7:00 PM at the church. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Betty Jane Carman was born August 27th, 1933, in Chamberlain, South Dakota to Harold and Mae (Deal) Hicks.

Betty, along with her twin sister, Norma, were the eldest of nine siblings, including three sisters and six brothers. She attended Kimball School 1-12 and graduated from Kimball High School in 1952.

On June 5th, 1955, Betty married Lyle Carman, and they shared a loving partnership for 62 years.  Together, they welcomed a son, Clayton of Fairbanks, Alaska and a daughter, Kathy of Horseshoe Bend, ID.

A dedicated educator, she taught for a combined 27 years at Maresh, Richland, and Eagle Center Country Schools, and served as the 5th grade teacher for the Kimball School District. Her passion for teaching was evident, and she cherished the opportunity to reconnect with her former students as they grew.

Betty was deeply involved in her church, contributing to quilting projects, and volunteering at the Kimball Tractor Museum.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Kathy (husband Dean) Moffis of Horseshoe Bend, ID;  brothers, Clifford (friend Barb) of Sioux Falls, SD, Ralph of Rapid City, SD, Robert (friend Theoda) of Pierre, SD, Roger (Sally) of Spokane, WA, and Leonard of Horseshoe Bend, ID; sister, Marilyn Koch of Pierre, SD; and sister-in-law, Sallie Hicks of Marysville, WA. As well as her grandsons, Shawn (wife Ryan) of Meridian, ID and Ryan (ex-wife Colie) of Boise, ID, and great-grandchildren, Hopper of Florida, and Quinn, Rebel, and Landon of Idaho.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; son, Clayton; parents, Harold and Mae; sister, Norma Butterfield; brother, Kenneth Hicks; sisters-in-law, Pricilla Hicks, Thelma Hicks, Carolyn Hicks, Martha Hicks, and Penny Hicks; brothers-in-law, Tony Koch and Dean Butterfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was a longtime director of the Brule County Historical Socierty and was a great supporter of the group. She slso was a community supporter. Her teaching career sucesafully taught many student. Well done, Betty. Rest in Peace.
