Obituary

Bertha “Glayn” Meier, 89, of White Lake, SD, passed away peacefully Friday, August 19, 2022 at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake with her husband of 67 years by her side. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, August 27 at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. Burial will be in White Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7:00 PM at the church. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Bertha Glayn (Hemeyer) Meier was born September 2, 1932 on a farm near Armour, South Dakota. “Glayn” was the 2nd child born to Leo and Ella Hemeyer. She was baptized at Blooming Valley Lutheran church near Corsica, and she was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spencer, NE.

When she was very young her parents moved to a farm north of Spencer, NE to be close to her mother’s family. It was there she started in country school until 5th grade, then her family moved to Naper, NE.  When she was 12 years old, she worked at the nationally famous White Horse Ranch in Naper.

The family moved to a farm by Stickney, SD when she was 14, and she graduated from Stickney High School in 1949. At the age of 16, she attended Notre Dame College in Mitchell, SD in the summers and taught at a country school south of Pukwana, SD during the school year. She taught at country schools for four years and in the Mitchell public schools for 2 years before she married Richard Meier on Feb 18, 1955. After marriage, they farmed northwest of White Lake, SD. Three children were born to this union, Glenn, Miriam, and Alan.

Glayn was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church where she taught Sunday School and served in various church roles. She was active in Red Hatters, Bridge Club, and enjoyed playing cards. During her life, she taught in several country schools and substitute taught in the Kimball and White Lake schools until she was 80. She enjoyed being outdoors, whether on the farm or tending to the garden. She enjoyed baking – her donuts were the favorite of many. Her and Richard traveled quite extensively, and in the later years, more to the gambling spots!

She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Glenn (Pat) Meier of Prince Frederick, MD, Miriam (Steve) Dexter of Cypress, TX, and Alan (Lori) Meier of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Gregory Meier, Christopher Meier, Julie Spalding, Sarah Laurico, Rachel Woolsey, Adrienne Mann, Alexander Meier, Allison Meier, and Sophia Meier; great-grandson, Nolan; his nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Florence Meier.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Coila Kaus.

She was one of my Mom's favorite South Dakota relatives. The wife of Mom's cousin Richard Meier. I'll bet they are having a fine time in heaven hashing over old memories
