Obituary

Audrey Doty, 82, of Mt. Vernon, SD, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell, after a brief illness. Visitation will be on Monday, June 23, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Burial will be at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

Audrey Doty was born on September 17, 1942, in Mitchell, SD, to Elmer and Dorothy (Heckel) Neugebauer. She grew up on the family farm and attended Country School at Union #9. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1960.

Her working career started at the Methodist Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She later found her niche in banking at the Commercial Bank in Mitchell, where she was employed for 36 years.

Audrey married Garry Doty on September 26, 1962. Shortly after, Garry was drafted and deployed with the United States Army to Hanau, Germany. That was when their only child, Steve, was born.

Audrey found deep and abiding joy in her church and faith. Through the years, she was actively involved with Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, helped with the newsletter, and served on the funeral committee.

Audrey enjoyed working in her yard, her flowers, setting puzzles together, traveling with her friends to watch car races, and playing cards with friends. She also deeply loved her cats, many of them being rescued.

There was never a time her care and thoughtfulness for others faded. She always remembered to send cards for birthdays, anniversaries, or condolences.

Her memory lives on with her husband, Garry; son, Steve Doty; sisters, Wilma Erickson of Mitchell, SD, Arlene Shrake of Pukwana, SD, and Linda Novotny of Arlington, TX; brothers-in-law, Francis (Judy) Doty and Darrell (Barb) Doty; sister-in-law, Connie Doty; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Dorothy Neugebauer; one sister; mother and father-in-law, Frank and Georgia Doty; sister in-law, Dorothy Doty; brothers-in-law, Clifford Doty, Jerome Erickson, and Ralph Shrake; and nephew Todd Doty.

My condolences to Audrey’s loved ones. I worked with her at Commercial Bank for many years. She was very well respected there…professional, meticulous, and with a great sense of humor. I was happy to get to visit with her a couple years ago at a reunion lunch for Commercial Bank women “alumni”, which she had helped organize.

I shared an office with her before Commercial Bank renovated in 1992! She was an awesome person and someone I deeply enjoyed and appreciated. I just drove past her old house in Mitchell a week or so ago and thought about good memories that she was a part of.
