Obituary

Arlene Hanten, 89, of White Lake, SD, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at The Village of Harmony Hill in Watertown, SD. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 13, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in White Lake. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:00 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service at the Church. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Doris Arlene Hanten was born November 13, 1935, to Lloyd and Retta (Bissell) Edwards on the family farm near Letcher, SD. Arlene attended Lakeview County School and graduated from Letcher High School.

Arlene married Ralph Meier in Plankinton, SD on September 15, 1954, and to this union had two sons, Dave and Ralph. After Ralph’s passing, Arlene later married Anthony Hanten on July 15, 1959, in White Lake, SD. Together they had four children, Ron, Joe, Barb, and Connie. Arlene’s favorite job was being a farm wife, and enjoyed watching her children grow up and raise families of their own. She also enjoyed traveling, dancing, singing, and most of all, spending time with family.

Arlene is survived by her sons, Dave (Jacque) Meier of Camp Verde, AZ, Ralph (Colett) Meier of Chino Valley, AZ, Ron (Deb) Hanten of Gillette, WY, and  Joe (Paulena) Hanten of White Lake, SD; daughters, Barb (Gregg) Struwe of Watertown, SD and Connie (Gene) Barry of Canby, MN; sister, Lois (Jim) Evers; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Meier and Anthony Hanten; brothers, Lyle (Faye) Edwards and Marion Edwards; and sister, Geraldine Edwards.

Arlene will be missed. She was a wonderful kind person and always treated us girls as part of the family. My heart goes out to you all that called her Mom .. and my prayers are sent for comfort and peace during this time. Wish we could be there with you all in White Lake to honor her.
