Obituary

Anna (Mae) Hofer, 83, of Dimock, SD, formerly of Alexandria, SD, went to her heavenly home Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at her home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 26, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at the Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Anna Mae Elizabeth Murray was born January 6, 1940, to Don and Margaret (Schoenfelder) Murray. Mae was the oldest of four girls. She grew up on the family farm south of Alexandria. She attended country school for elementary and Holy Family Catholic School in Mitchell for her high school years.

Mae married Javern Hofer on June 2, 1958, in Alexandria. They farmed and raised six children: Steve, Doug, Brad, Deb, Greg, and Jason, 8.5 miles south of Alexandria.

Mae worked at the Colony of Mercy for a few years, then Mae and Javern went to farming, milking cows, crops, and custom work. She also worked at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell until it closed. She then worked at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater until they moved to Dimock in 1992 and purchased the town bar, Hofer’s Lounge. The Lounge provided lots and lots of activities and memories.

Mae ran Hofer’s Lounge for 26 years and decided to finally retire in 2016. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids. She also enjoyed taking bus tours with her sisters. She looked forward to playing cards with many local ladies 2-3 times a week. Mae was the rock of her very large family.

Mae was survived by her children, Steve (Kim) Hofer of Alexandria, Doug Hofer of Dimock, Greg (Becky) Hofer of Dimock, and Jason Hofer of O’Neil, NE; two sisters, Joan McBrayer of Ethan, and Jean (Dick) Brown of Sioux Falls; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Javern; parents; son, Brad; daughter, Debra; sister, Judy; and her mother and father-in-law.
