Andrew “Andy” Vissia, 87, of White Lake, SD, died Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 25, at the United Methodist Church in White Lake. Burial will be at White Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at White Lake United Methodist Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service.
Andrew “Andy” John Vissia was born on March 20, 1937, to Jake and Gertie (Judstra) Vissia in Mt. Morrison, CO. Andy graduated from 8th grade at Cooper School in Aurora County. Andy served in the US Air Force from 1957 to 1961, stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California, and continued his service in the Reserves from 1961 to 1963.
Andy was united in marriage to Ruby Nightingale Hall on May 15, 1962, in White Lake.
After his military service, he owned and operated Andy’s Mobil Service in White Lake. Andy also drove school bus and served many years in law enforcement, including two years as Sheriff and eight years as Deputy Sheriff in Aurora County. Andy worked at the State Training School in Plankinton and served 18 years as a volunteer with the White Lake Ambulance Service. He also worked for area farmers throughout his life – his favorite job was fixing fence.
Andy always enjoyed the outdoors, especially riding horses in his younger years, as he was a true cowboy. In his later years, he enjoyed taking walks and sitting outside on sunny days. He also enjoyed listening to the radio and his Sunday morning church service.
Andy is survived by his children, Sharon (Eric) Nowotny of White Lake, Marlene (Joe) Anderson of White Lake, Bob Hall of Mitchell, and Mark Hall of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren: Carmen (Norton) Truman, Winston (Baillie) Nowotny, David (Brandy Dyer) Anderson, Jennifer (Shannon) Hydeman, Shawna (Steve) DeMink, Jessica Hall, Joshua (Amy) Hall, Jamie (Wyatt) Berekvam; great-grandchildren: Casey, Callie, and Camrie Truman, Rhett Nowotny, Emily Anderson, Trinity, Tristan, and Adeline Hydeman, Amanda and Ella Beardsley, Knox and Brayker Hall, Levi and Erik Berekvam; brothers, Al (Johna) Vissia of Plankinton and George (Ana) Vissia of Whitewood, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; his parents; two brothers, Richard (Clarice) Vissia and Larry Vissia; and close friend, Inge Glissendorf.
