On November 15, 1930, a baby boy was born to Clarence and Lorraine (Koster) Hohn. They named him Alfred John, and he would be the first of five children: Wilibrd, Geneva, Jeanette, and JoAnne. Alfred lived and grew up on a farm west of Ethan; he attended Tobin #18 school until the 8th grade, and then began farming with his dad. He realized his love for the farm and said he started his own farming career with two ducks given to him by Pete Schoenelder. Those ducks multiplied, and he traded them for pigs; and thus, the start of a lifetime love for the farm.

On August 11, 1952, he married Celesta Weber at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. They moved to their first farm west of Dimock and stayed there for 6 months before moving to a farm west of Ethan, where they resided for the next 62 years. To this union, they were blessed with four children. They attended Emsley Church in rural Ethan until it closed, and they joined Holy Spirit Parish in Mitchell.

Alfred enjoyed the farm wholeheartedly and, along with Sally, continued to maintain a dairy and hog farm, for which he received several trophies for excellent production numbers and even earned a free pickup at one point for continuing to improve his standards. In 2013, his health caused him to give up the farm and move to Mitchell, where they resided for 10 years before becoming tenants at Edgewood Assisted Living. He tried to enjoy city life, but the squirrels and birds just did not fill the hole left in his heart by his farm. He was born a farmer, and in his heart, he died a farmer.

Alfred was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, joining when he was 14 years old. He also belonged to the Farmers Union for many years.

Alfred is survived wife, Sally; children, Elaine (Chuck) Thuringer of Mitchell, Dan (Linda) Hohn of Rapid City, and Marilyn (Mark) Thuringer of Woodbury, MN; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Wilibrd; sisters, Jeanette Gebel and Geneva Lichter; and sisters-in-law, Mary Weber, Sharon Weber, and Esther Weber.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dean; sister, Jo Ann; sister-in-law, Darlene Hohn; brothers-in-law, Jerry Gebel, Don Stifel, and Jim Lichter; and in-laws, Don and Delores Weber, Alvin and Devona Nolz, Nick Weber, Larry Weber, infant Allen Weber, Ed and Luella Young, Verdell and Marina Bauhs, George and Teresa Hardina, Delores and Dan Oxborrow, Hilaria and Sam Stoehr, Cleo and John Galloway; and daughter-in-law Carla Hohn.

Alfred left this earth to receive his heavenly reward on September 28, 2026. He and Sally were married 74 years and the legacy he leaves behind will be proudly carried on by his descendants.

He was a great man who lived a great long life. Also I feel the need to add that he was also preceded in death by his brother in law, my dad, Anthony Weber. RIP to both.

My deepest sympathy to you all during this most difficult time. I have precious memories of visiting Uncle Alfred and Aunt Celesta and cousins on the farm on our annual summer trip to South Dakota from Wisconsin. My mother Theresa was Aunt Celesta's sister. Then years later, I brought my children to South Dakota and to the farm so they could meet Aunt Celesta and Uncle Alfred, and Uncle Alfred gave them a ride in his tractor! I will cherish all of those memories forever. Love and Prayers, Deb Spranger
