Obituary

Alan Schneider, 83, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2025, at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday, January 31, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at a later date at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Alan John Schneider was born March 4, 1941, to John H. and Mildred (Cherry) Schneider in Mitchell. He attended grade school in Lisbon Township and high school in Mitchell, graduating in 1959.

Alan married Phyllis Jenks in 1963, and to this union they had a daughter, Julie. Alan was always a farmer, and also worked for Orville Bussmus Construction while they built the Mitchell Post Office.  Alan was drafted into the US Army in April 1964. He served in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in April 1966. He came home and returned to farming.

He married Doris (Bertram) Mehlhaff October 29, 1984.

Alan was an avid hunter and loved to watch wildlife, and in his later years collected old tractors. He was a humble man.

He was a member of the VFW, NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Sheriff’s Association, FOP, and SDHP.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; stepdaughter, Sandi (Brian) Paugh; brother, Paul (Karen); sister Marcia Koustrup; grandchildren, Brittany, Drew, and Brody; four great-grandchildren; and two step-grandsons, Josh (Ashley) and Jaaron (Randi)

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Julie; sister, Kay Ilene Schneider; brother, Terry; and brother-in-law, Steve Koustrip.

Hi Doris: I was gone at the time of the funeral and have not known how to contact you.
I am so sorry for your loss. I liked Alan very much and did not know he had been ill.I hope we can talk in person.

You will be missed brother we had some good times hunting and fishing. I got to play with some of your beautiful old John Deere tractors I even got to Drive your beautiful 730 in a parade in Ethan. With love your little brother. RIP.
