Obituary

Wayne “Bud” Phillips, 85, of Sturgis formerly of Mitchell, SD, died Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at Monument Health Senior Care Center in Sturgis. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 5, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Bud was born January 3, 1937, to Roy and Grace Phillips in Mitchell, South Dakota. He grew up and went to school in Mitchell. He did odd jobs growing up including working at the Mitchell produce, the rendering plant, and eventually on June 15, 1960, he had a full-time career at the Mitchell Fire Department. Every Christmas he would be the department's Santa Claus. He absolutely loved doing this.  He worked many years there until his retirement on January 4, 1992. On his off days, he had a sod and tree-cutting business.

Bud and Bev were united in marriage August 3, 1956, and from this union they had three children, David, Judy, and Jody.

Bud had a love for hunting and fishing. He spent much of his time on the Missouri River and caught many fish. On one particular day, on Lake Oahe (Cow Creek), April 12, 1982, he caught a Northern Pike weighing in at 25lbs, 11 oz. He had also spent many years in the goose pits, hunting pheasants, partridge, ducks, and doves in the area and hunted deer and antelope. He also had hundreds of pictures showing all the wild game and fish he got and the friends that were along for the hunt and most definitely stories, laughs and jokes!

Bud is survived by his son David (Deb) Phillips, Whitewood, SD; two daughters, Judy Mackey (Bob Short) and Jody Phillips-Olson (Arthur Fuller), both of Sturgis; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gary (Maureen) Phillips.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; two grandchildren, Claire Ann Mackey and Chris Phillips; one sister, Ruth; brothers, Leo, Walter, Robert, George, and Lloyd; and son-in-law, Dan Olson.
