Obituary

Violet “Janice” Phillips, 88, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, December 25, 2022, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, January 5, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangments by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

***Due to weather, the visitation Tuesday, Jan. 3 for Janice has been canceled*** 

***Funeral service has been postponed until Thursday, Jan. 5 at 2:00 PM***

Janice (Stumm) Phillips was born May 22, 1934 to Charles and Mary (Schramm) Stumm in Fedora, SD. She spent a few years of her childhood in Fedora and later moved to Mitchell graduating from Mitchell high school in 1952.

She married Lloyd Phillips June 2, 1953, in Mitchell. They were blessed with 4 children. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. Janice enjoyed being outside caring for her flowers, reading in the sun on the patio and crocheting. She worked at Mcdonald's once her youngest child was in school and then was employed with the Mitchell School District for 25+ years until her retirement. She thoroughly enjoyed working with the students. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. She was also a member of the Red Hats in Mitchell.

Janice is survived by her children, Scott (Barb) Phillips of Mitchell, Father Randy Phillips of Faulkton, Mark Phillips of Sioux Falls, and Lynda (Greg) Kludt of Montrose; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother, Fay Stumm.

Janice was my cousin and I babysat for her boys. She was a beautiful woman. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Mrs Phillips was one of the nicest. She helped my throughout grade school. Always so sweet, and patient. Prayers to her family. She was one of the greatest. ❤️

I have so many fond memories of working with Janice at Whittier and then LBW. She was a lot of fun and we shared many laughs. She was a master para-educator, although too humble to see that in herself. Blessed be her memory and may she Rest in Peace.

Janice was such a kind and caring person. She gave me lots of rides home when I was at Mitchell Middle School so I did not have to walk home. Hugs and prayers to her family! Heaven gained another angel!

Janice was one of the best. I loved having her in my classroom. She loved kids. After her retirement she volunteered to read with my students. I appreciated her and her commitment to students. She helped many many students. Prayers to her family.
