Violet Lily Batterman was born March 19, 1933 to William and Emma (Fuerst) Baumiller in Parkston, SD. She grew up in Parkston and attended school in Parkston. Violet worked various jobs including, Kenny’s Place and Firesteel Healthcare Center. She retired at the age of 60 from Firesteel.
Violet met Norman Ray Batterman shortly before he was deployed in the Army to Germany. They fell in love by writing letters back and forth during Norman’s 18-month deployment. They were married shortly after his return on July 26, 1953. She treasured the love that they shared, kept every letter, and eventually had the letters made into a pillow that she cherished.
Violet loved sewing, knitting, reading, cooking, church activities including making baptismal shawls, and volunteering for years at the Parkston hospital and Amstar making popcorn each week. She enjoyed the simplest of moments like having an afternoon ladies “coffee clutch.” She enjoyed her life most by spending time with her friends, and family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We will forever cherish the memories of her, the love she shared, and the family that she and Norman started.
Grateful to have shared in her life are her husband of 68 years, Norman; children: Terry (Linette) Batterman, Scott Batterman, and Brenda (Gary) Mayer; grandchildren: Dustin (Tori) Batterman, Nicholas (significant other Julie) Batterman, Aaron Mayer, Ashley (significant other Sean) Batterman, Mindi (Rocky) Smith, Heather (Michael) Alcanter; 9 great-grandchildren: Clayton, Berkley, Jack, Mollie, Olivia, Charley, Adrian, Madilyn, and Maya; and numerous nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Adeline Streyle; sister, Delphine Juhnke; daughter-in-law, Jackie Batterman; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Juhnke.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to Salem Lutheran Church.
