Obituary

Marie Kirton, 88, of Hemet, CA, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022, after a long illness. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday, September 23, at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell with a luncheon and fellowship to follow at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Marie was born January 12, 1934, in Kaylor, SD to Otto and Hilda Fuerst. Marie grew up in many towns including Tripp, Wessington Springs, and Huron with her brothers and sisters. She moved to Mitchell at age 15 where she worked as a waitress at many cafés including Texaco Café, Palace Café, Shamrock Café, Courts Café, and a short time at Chef Louie's.

She married EuGene Kirton on December 19, 1950, and had 2 daughters together. They lived in Mitchell for many years, then moved to Howard for a few years, before they returned to live in Mitchell. After losing her spouse, Marie moved to California in 1979 with her children. She worked as a cook at a couple local nursing homes until she retired.

Marie always loved to bake, especially cookies for the neighborhood children who often called her grandma. Marie was a giving person who never wanted to see a child go without. She always made sure they had school supplies or a Christmas present, as well as some yummy baked Christmas goodies.

Marie played the role of two parents and never let us know the sacrifices she made, for that, we are strong, well-rounded women because of the way she raised us.

She is survived by her children, Peggy Kirton and Pam (Sam) Carlos both of Hemet; grandchildren, Ryan Kirton, Samuel (Kari) Carlos, Zachary (Christi) Carlos, Amber Carlos; great-grandchildren, Avery Carlos and Cannyn Carlos; one brother and three sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband EuGene Kirton, parents, and 14 brothers and sisters.

Marie has been on my mind lately. I think of her so often and all the good times we had working together at the South Side Tex. She always stopped to have coffee when she was in town Peggy ( can’t remover your little sisters name ) my thoughts and prayers are with you during these tough days.
