Obituary

Janice Barry, 80, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, in Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. A graveside service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, June 18 in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Janice Marie Lillie was born July 6, 1941, to Walter and Dorothy (Miller) Lillie in Huron, SD. She attended Huron public schools until her senior year when her family moved to Rapid City. She graduated from Rapid City High School with honors in 1959.

She returned to Huron and was hired by NW Bank as a stenographer, and a few years later was hired by USDA Farmers Home Administration state office where she worked for 23 years.

Janice married Gerald Dammann on June 11, 1961, and they had two sons, Kirk and David.

In 1985 she married her childhood friend Don Barry, and they made their home in Mitchell where Janice started the community’s first temporary staffing business, Mitchell Temporary. She sold the business in 1996 to help her husband in his battle with cancer.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years.

Janice moved to Sioux Falls in 2014.

She adored her children and her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She enjoyed sunrises, lilacs, history, reading, Scrabble, long walks, and extensive travels with her husband Don, and then with her friends.

Janice is survived by her sons, Kirk (Connie) Dammann and David (Willa) Dammann; grandchildren, Travis (JoElle) Dammann, Kaelyn (Cade) Dawn, and Nick, Zach, Max, and Mitch Dammann; and great-grandchildren, Samson and Kieran Dammann and Charlie Dawn. She is also survived by her sister, Lois Watkins; brother, James (Bernadette) Lillie; sisters-in-law, Sharon Lillie and Nyla (Leo) Kleinsasser; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

I just found out that Janice passed last year in June of 2022. What a wonderful lady Janice was. I am shocked to learn that she is now gone. I missed her all of these years.

Hi Mom, you are the strongest person I'll ever know. I really didn't deserve you. Not a day goes by that I don't remember you, even a year later. You married our (and David's) father on June 11. Your husband Don passed on June 11. I had flowers delivered to you from Don on June 11th for years. And you last reminded me of that on June 9th. You were already on hospice for days at that time. I stayed later than visitation was allowed, and nobody asked me to leave. Your wings were ready, but my heart was not. I love you Mom.

Today is your Birthday Mom. I remain saddened that I was unable to visit as planned. You were always there for me, whatever I needed, you could help. You were the perfect conduit for family updates. I miss you dearly, more than this comment can express. Love David.
