James Anthony Pavlin was born July 1, 1942, to Anthony and Ethel (Crater) Pavlin in Chamberlain, SD. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1959 and he continued farming with his brother for his dad (who died in July, 1960) and helped his mother raise the younger children.

Jim had a passion for farming and livestock. He enjoyed seeing the crops and livestock grow. From the age of 10 he was driving a truck and a tractor working the fields.
