Obituary

James “Jim” Pavlin, 79, of Mt. Vernon/Parkston, SD, died Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls as a result of an accident with his beloved farm truck. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 1, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

James Anthony Pavlin was born July 1, 1942, to Anthony and Ethel (Crater) Pavlin in Chamberlain, SD. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1959 and he continued farming with his brother for his dad (who died in July, 1960) and helped his mother raise the younger children.

He married Agnes Janish on April 1, 1988.

Jim had a passion for farming and livestock. He enjoyed seeing the crops and livestock grow. From the age of 10 he was driving a truck and a tractor working the fields. He was a hardworking farmer and a fixer of everything never asking for help. He always said, “I can do it myself”. He was a patient, caring person who would do anything for anyone without asking a question. He had a big heart and put everyone first.

He enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren. They could pick him out of a crowd and come running.

James is survived by his step-daughters, Kathy Kokesh, Wagner and Mary (Darren) Meeks, Rapid City; 3 brothers, Ron (Ramona) Pavlin, Mitchell, Charles Pavlin, Sioux Falls, and Tom (Trudy) Pavlin, Mitchell; 1 sister, Ethel “Blondie” Pavlin, Sioux Falls; 8 step-grandchildren, Richard (finance’ Brooklyn) Kokesh, Kimberly (Tyler) Pepper, Kristi (Heath) Gumb, Robert (Maddi) Kokesh, Jessica (friend Alex) Meeks, McKenzie Meeks, Kaleigh (friend Beau) Meeks, and Leigha Meeks; step-great-grandchildren, Liam, Lane, Logan, Lincoln, Klay, and Ally; 2 nieces, Rachael (Chris) Foster, Shauna (Len) Smith; step-nephew, Shawn Veurink; great-nieces and nephews, Olivia, Natasha, Lily, Lydia, Alex, Christian, Brayden, and Ian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes; parents, Anthony and Ethel; brother, Don; stepsister, Pearl Crawford; stepbrother, Ralph; step-sons, Pat and Robert Janish; and his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
