Evelyn Frances French


April 7, 1918 - May 29, 2012





Evelyn Frances LaBar was born on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1918 the daughter of Frank and Kathryn (Dunlap) LaBar of rural White Earth, ND.  She graduated from high school in White Earth as valedictorian.  She attended college at Minot, ND.  She married Hiro Charles French June 21, 1939 at Butte, MT.  They had four children.  They lived in Williston ND for twelve and a half years and then Tioga, ND where she and Hiro had bought the Gamble Store.  After selling the Gamble Store Evelyn worked as City Treasurer and legal secretary in Tioga.  In 1979 she and Hiro moved to Grand Forks and in 1983 started spending the winter months at a Desert Camp in southern CA.  In 1995 they moved to Howard SD and 2003 to Mitchell, SD.

Evelyn enjoyed her family so much and interacted with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending many of their activities.  Evelyn also enjoyed doing crafts, ceramics, needlepoint, counter cross-stitch, quilting, playing cards and working various kinds of puzzles.

She was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church and attended Bible Study in California and Mitchell.  She loved her Lord, Jesus.

Evelyn is survived by three children:  Keith (Diane) French, Tomah, WI, Steve (Kay) French, Mitchell, SD, Cathy (Jerome) Nelson, Crookston, MN; seven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, sister, Lucille Neset, Stockton, CA and sister-in-law, Phyllis Hanson, Kenmare, ND.

She was preceded in death by Hiro, her husband of 72 years; a son, Colin; brothers:  Clive LaBar and G.L. LaBar and a sister, Blanche LaBar; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
