Susie Edna Bunger was born on July 9, 1930 to Paul P. and Susie (Hofer) Tschetter. A few hours later, her mother passed away. She was then raised in the Freeman area by her maternal grandmother and two uncles Ike and Jake. She went on to receive her eighth grade diploma in May of 1944 from the Hutchinson County Public School.

In January 1951, Susie married Alfred Hofer. Together, they had four children: James, Jerry, Bonnie and Carrie. Alfred also had a daughter Beverly (Gordon) Spars. Alfred died in 1960.

Susie raised her children in the Freeman area, while working various jobs.

While working at the restaurant at Stanley Corner, she met Wilmer Bunger. Susie and Wilmer were married on May 31st, 1973. They lived in the rural Emery area, where Susie was a homemaker and a proud farmer’s wife.

Nothing brought Susie more joy than having her entire family gathered at her home for holidays. She was known for her life changing fried chicken and her knack for incredible tasting baked goods. Susie enjoyed planting her garden and watching it grow. She also loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

She is survived by her husband Wilmer, her four children; James (Pam) Hofer, Jerry (Jean) Hofer, Bonnie (Jerry) Engbrecht and Carrie (Roger) Richter, her six grandchildren: Nick (Lisa) Hofer, Chad Hofer, Luke Engbrecht, Wendy (Ryan) Quam, Joe (Stephanie) Janssen, and Anne Janssen; ten great-grandchildren: Avery, Hannah, Kathryn, Benjamin, Dean, and Gretchen Hofer, Camdyn and Aubree Stoterau, and Carson and Elle Quam; and five half-siblings: Solomon Tschetter, Darlene Schaefer, Judy Schofield, Evelyn Wallman, and Diane Graber.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Paul and Dave; her sisters Betty Gross, Marie Hayes, and Elsie Wipf; and her half-brothers, Melvin and Edwin.
