Lyle Howard, 103, of Mitchell, SD, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at his home under hospice care in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, April 14 at Faith Missionary Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the Faith Missionary Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
The Reverend Lyle Andrew Howard was born May 7, 1917, near Almena in Northern County, Kansas to Edward and Alice (Henthorne) Howard, the seventh of eight children. He departed this life April 9, 2021, at the age of 103 years and 11 months and 2 days.
While he was still an infant, the family moved to the area near Platte, South Dakota, where he grew up. In 1941 Lyle was united in marriage with Lois Myrann. Four children, Lindell, Elaine, David, and James were born to this union. After Bible school in Mitchell and two pastorates in South Dakota, the family served as missionaries in Cuba from 1949-1953. Upon returning to the States, the family settled in Mitchell, South Dakota, where Rev. Howard became the pastor of Faith Missionary Church where he served for 51 years.
While fulfilling his pastoral responsibilities, Rev. Howard also was president of the Faith Missionary Association, traveled back to Cuba several times, made evangelistic journeys to seven other countries, and did evangelistic work in various places in the United States. After retirement, Reverend Howard wrote his memoirs and published a book of his sermons.
He is survived by his children, Lindell (Judy) Howard, Mitchell, South Dakota; Elaine (Martin) Swinehart, Lenexa, Kansas; David (Tessa) Howard, Winner, South Dakota; and James (Fredde) Howard of Hobe Sound, Florida; 15 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lyle was predeceased by Lois, his wife of 71 years, his parents, and siblings.
