Obituary

James “Jim” Johnson, 74, of Mitchell, formerly of Mt. Vernon, SD, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 6, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Private interment will be at Victor Cemetery in rural Mt. Vernon, SD.

James Allen Johnson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated farmer, passed away on April 3, 2024. He was born on December 31, 1949, in Mitchell, SD, to Dorothy Lorraine Johnson and Alfred Howard Johnson.

Jim was one of the strongest and toughest men, yet possessed a gentle and kind soul that touched the lives of all who knew him. His unwavering strength served as an inspiration, while his kindness and gentleness left a lasting impact on the hearts of many. Jim was a devout man of faith, serving as an example to all who crossed his path. He found solace and purpose in his beliefs, guiding him through life's challenges with grace and resilience.

Jim's passion for farming ignited from an early age at his family's farm in Mount Vernon, SD. He proudly served in the National Guard until his father's illness required him to return home and take over the family farm. Cherishing every aspect of farming, from planting to harvest, Jim's love for black Angus cattle was unwavering.

On September 3rd, 1971, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Joan Louise Boisen, and together they built a life on the family farm. They shared a love for Quarter Horses, traveling and showing them. Jim's farming endeavors extended beyond cattle, as he also raised sheep, pigs, and other livestock. However, his true joy always stemmed from working with cattle and tending to his farm.

Known for his fantastic sense of humor, Jim cherished moments spent in conversation over a cup of coffee, relishing in the company of friends and family. His warm presence and genuine interest in others made every encounter meaningful, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to share in his company. He was also passionate about the outdoors and hunting. He founded Aurora Prairie Outfitters, a guided pheasant hunt service where he formed many lasting friendships over 20+ years while leading and guiding groups.

Among Jim's greatest treasures were his three granddaughters, Kyra, Ella, and Arianna, whom he adored dearly. His legacy lives on through them and the memories he created with his family and friends.

Jim is survived by his best friend and wife, Joan, and his children: Ben (Heather) Johnson and their daughters Kyra and Ella of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mandy Farris and her daughter Arianna Farris of Sioux Falls, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Alfred, and his brother, Larry.

Jim will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passion for farming, his infectious laughter, his strong faith, and his kind heart will be remembered fondly by his loved ones and the community he cherished.

It is with deep sorrow that I read of Jim’s passing. He and Joan were so very good to us when we moved to SD and our family has very fond memories of spending time with Jim & Joan! Jim taught us to pheasant hunt! And Miss Joan blessed us with the most wonderful hot soup meals when we came in from a hint! We cherish our friendship and will always remember Jim being a kind & gentle man with great stories & an awesome laugh! Joan & family, you have our deepest sympathy for the earthly passing of Mr. Jim Johnson!

Joan, Ben, and Mandy, Weare sorry to hear about the loss of your husband and father. Jim, Joan, Judy, and I were all classmates in 1968 at MVHS. Jim and I were good, close friends during all of our high school years. We sang together in a quartet group for a couple of years. I am sorry that we will not be able to attend the visitation. Never forget Jim starting the C.O.W. (ie..Change Our World) ministry at Northridge Baptist Church. Jim & Joan would sell a fed steer, and donate the proceeds to the C.O.W. fund. Then on a given Sunday parishioners could go forward and get $20 to give away to someone in need....thus "Changing Our World". Because of Jesus we will meet again. His to peace to Joan and the family during this time.
