Ida Mary Fischer was born June 24, 1923 at Tripp SD to Christ and Christina (Frey) Fischer. Her elementary education was completed at Buechler School #83 south of Tripp; and she later attended classes at Dakota Wesleyan University
Ida moved with her sister, Delores, to California during her late teens, returning to the family farm near Tripp, SD in the mid-1940s to help manage the farm due to her father’s declining health. During these years Ida also worked as a caretaker in Sioux Falls with the Schwann family.
At the age of 16, Ida met the love of her life at a dancehall in Parkston. Ida married William Brady of Marion, SD on January 28, 1947. From this union, William, Dennis, Richard, Donald, Ann Marie, and Mary Kay were born.
In 1947, Ida and Bill moved into Mitchell, SD, later moving to a farm six miles south of Mitchell in 1958. After 43 years of farming, gardening, and raising their children, Ida and Bill moved back to Mitchell in 2001.
Ida’s life was one of complete devotion to her family; her unconditional love was boundless. Her greatest joy came knowing she had met the needs of her family, regardless of the many sacrifices she undertook. Ida especially loved baking and gardening. Her purple ribbon bread was legendary, and her kuchen was without equal. Her laughter and cheerful disposition was a constant delight to all on many occasions throughout her life.
During her final weeks and months, Ida was greatly comforted by the many friends, relatives, and family members who came to visit her. The surprise visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren touched her immensely and were her best medicine.
Grateful for sharing her life are her six children: William of Rapid City, SD, Dennis of Charleston, WV, Richard (Jane) of Rapid City, SD, Donald of Brookings, SD; Ann (Dwight) Scott and Mary (Ron) Schaefer both of Mitchell; her 13 grandchildren: Emily Brady Church, Joseph Brady, Kristin Brady, Karen Brown, Kate Filut, Joseph Fox, Kathryn Fox, Chris Schaefer, Jonathon Schaefer, Kimberly Schaefer, Samantha Schaefer, Andrew Scott and Christina Scott and her 10 great-grandchildren: Blake, Trinity, Maggie, Christian, William, Andrea, Lydia, Noah, Knox and Ella.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 2012; and three sisters, and five brothers. She is survived by her 6 children and their families, along with her sisters, Betty Meyer of Parkston SD, and Delores Cottrell of Davis, CA, and one brother, Shorty (Maydean) Fischer of Mitchell SD.
