Maxine Nickel was born October 10, 1921 to Herman and Hilda (Carlson) Hansen at Ethan, SD. She attended country schools and graduated from Ethan High School in 1939. She was employed at Methodist Hospital. In support of the war effort she worked at a coil factory at Roanoke, IN from 1944 to 1945.
As a child she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. As an adult she became a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
On June 8, 1947 she married Stewart Nickel at Ethan. They resided in Mitchell until 1951 at which time they moved to a farm in the Plano Township. In 2000 they moved to Mitchell and had been residents since that time. She loved music, gardening, baking, visiting friends and family and country life.
She is survived by her daughters, Gayle (David) Barnaby, Maple Grove, MN, Elaine (Bill) Furister, Greeley, CO; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart (2002); a son, Lloyd; a daughter, Karen Jackman; her parents and her six siblings.
A Memorial Fund has been established
to benefit Zion Lutheran Church.
