Darl Richard Allen was born on November 18, 1951 to Darl and LaVon (Boysen) Allen in Mitchell SD. He attended school in Chamberlain. Growing up in Chamberlain, he was raised to love the outdoors and enjoyed being on the river with his brothers, camping and running around town with his friends.
Darl enlisted in the United States Army on September 30, 1970 and volunteered for the Vietnam War on May 11, 1971. Upon his arrival back to the United States in March 1972, he met Cheryl Heidner, who became the love of his life for 41 years. They were wed on February 6, 1973 in Lawton OK. After his three years in the service, he joined the National Guard for one year and was honorably discharged on September 29, 1976.
After serving his country, Darl and Cheryl settled in Mitchell SD where they built a loving family. Darl’s career started at Herters Manufacturing and continued at the Mitchell Rendering Plant for seven years until he found that his true passion was working for the City of Mitchell, where he spent the next 30 years. He started in the sanitation department tossing garbage cans and worked his way to the street department and finished his career as the Manager of the City of Mitchell Landfill.
Besides spending time with his family, taking his grandchildren to the park, hunting, fishing, tinkering in his shed, Darl spent as much time as possible enjoying the South Dakota outdoors. He was a man who was the first to show up to work and the last to leave, but always made sure he was there for his family. He also had the biggest heart; he was happy to help anyone in need, no matter what the task; taking care of their lawn, fixing their car or just a kind gesture to lend a hand to help someone he didn’t even know.
Grateful to be a part of his life is his wife, Cheryl; with this union, God blessed them with three amazing children: Christine Allen, Eric Allen and Heather Allen Hohn. He also gained a second son when his youngest daughter, Heather, married Dana Hohn. His life was filled with the joy of his grandchildren, Skyler Wittenhagen, Hannah Hohn, Jaxson Wittenhagen and London Hohn. His family and grandchildren were a gift from God that he cherished every day of his life.
He is survived by his sisters, Linda (Larry Olsen) Allen of Pukwana SD, Robin (Dennis) Pense of Burke SD, Bonnie (Walter) Powell of Chamberlain SD, Brenda (Rob) Pickner of Chamberlain SD, Lori (Bob) Podhradsky of Mitchell and Tammy (Gary) Allen of Orcutt CA; brothers: Ricky (Fran) Allen of Lead SD, Darren (Margie) Allen of Chamberlain SD, Daryl (Leslie) Allen of Pukwana SD. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and so many others who considered him a father and grandfather that he deeply cared for.
He is preceded in death by his mother, LaVon (Bonnie) Allen, father, Darl Allen, sister, Becky Becker, brothers, David and Doyle and grandparents, Bruce Sr. and Alberta Allen and Martin and Selma Boysen.
