Paul Edward Manthei


November 18, 1927 - January 29, 2014


Paul Edward Manthei was born November 18, 1927 on the family homestead in Ziebach County to Otto and Evelyn (Dorn) Manthei. 
He married Norina “Dottie” Elizabeth Grate on June 5, 1955, and ranched at Glad Valley, SD where their 4 children were born.  In 1970 they moved to the Black Hills area where they raised their family. After over 40 years of ranching, Paul went into the lumber business and worked at the Dixon Sawmill until it closed in 1985, and was known to have coffee in every café within a hundred mile radius of Sturgis. They moved to Mitchell in 2009.

He is survived by son, Chester Paul Manthei and wife, Cheryl of Wessington Springs, SD, three daughters:  Lillian Euella Manthei of Whitewood, SD; Clara Mae Reinert of Mitchell, SD;  and Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Manthei of Ellensburg, WA; six grandsons:  Jacob Mittleider of Whitewood, SD; Wayne Haskell II and wife, Dawn of Ellensburg, WA; Jeramiah Haskell of Ellensburg WA; Raymond Gibson and wife, Jackie of Gillette, WY; Benjamin Reinert and wife, Montana of Mitchell, SD; and step-grandchildren, Teri Main and husband, Dale of Keystone, SD; Nicole Reifers of Rapid City; Chad Reifers and wife, Jeanette of Scottsdale, AZ; and Judd Reifers and wife, Laura of George, IA; great grandchildren: Destiny Rose Stone, Mason and Marissa Haskell, Tiffany, Shelby, Tabitha Wisser, and Kalli & Jaxon Mitteleider; great-great grandson Garrett Stone; step great grandchildren: Brenden Reifers, Colton Nielsen, Bailey, Kobe, and Levi Main; Jayden and Rylee Bugenhagen; one sister, Edna Bell of Tacoma, WA, brothers-in-law, John Grate and wife, Marlene and Lyle Grate and wife, Shari, sisters-in-law, Billie Syfie and Lorraine Asse and several nieces and nephews.

Paul  was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Clarence and Lillian Grate; wife Norina, an infant twin sister Pauline, infant set of twins, brother Milferd and wife Bertha; sisters Lillian and husband Gus Mueller, Mabel and husband Fritz Kohlwey, Florence and husband Joe Brasco; brothers-in-law,  John (Jack) Bell, Leo Grate, Ferris Syfie; sister-in-law Danny Grate; grandson Rex Cody Edward Mittleider; nephews, John Syfie, Lee Mueller and Larry Kohlwey and niece, Shirley Mueller.


Memorial Services and burial will be held this summer at Isabel, SD.

Dad I already miss you I wish I could of had more time with you . You have two more Grandbabies you did not get to see . I Know you are watching over all of us now . You and Mom are once again together that is a comforting thought for me . None of Your Grandson's are very good at expressing there emotion they got that from You . But they all loved You and will Miss You very much We got our five Generation Picture with You . You were very happy that day I will always cherish that .and pepper and Bernard loved you so much they looked forward to seeing you every chance they got . Dad just know you will be remembered by so many and missed you were one of kind you taught us all so much in your own silly way you held us all together I hope you are at piece now you had a long life . love you and miss you ...
