Marvin I. Espedal


May 27, 1919 - January 20, 2014


Marvin I. Espedal was born May 27, 1919 in the family home at rural Plankinton to Thor and Clara (Jacobson) Espedal.  He graduated from Hopper Consolidated School in 1937.  He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon and was a lifetime member.  On May 29, 1943 he married Elaine Soma.  They farmed in Aurora County until retiring in 1985 and they bought a home in Mount Vernon.  In 2009 they moved to Countryside Living in Mitchell where he resided until a fall required him to move to Avera Brady Nursing Home in November, 2012.

Marvin had a beautiful singing voice and sang solos in church and for many weddings and funerals over the years.  He had been a member of a men’s quartet from Salem Lutheran Church at one time.  During his year at Brady he continued this tradition which he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine and four children: Irvin (Debra), DeForrest, WI; Darrell, Plankinton; Nancy (Duane) Baker, Fremont, NE and Sharon Young, Mitchell; ten grandchildren:  Angela Espedal, Jordan (Patricia) Espedal, Ashley Espedal, Heidi Tegels, Andrew (Christy) Espedal, Jenifer (Jeff) Barton, Adam (Deb) Baker, Alex (Katie) Baker, April (Chad) Crago and Abby (Trent) Vanden Hoek;  twenty-three great-grandchildren:  Anna (Michael) Massey, Emily Ortega, Wyatt and Ethan Eggers, Jolene and Lucia Espedal, Nolan and Morgan Tegels, Lane, Allyson and Katylin Espedal, Grace and Eli Barton, Lauren, Rebecca and Gavin Baker, Ella and Ava Baker, Ty and Sam Crago, Cali, Max and Remi Vanden Hoek and two great-great-grandchildren:  Lilee Massey and Brett Bauman.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph and wife, YuVonne, son-in-law, Tom Young and two grandchildren: Dana Espedal and Kari Baker.

Aunt Elaine and Family - Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this time of loss. It is our hope each of you will find comfort in the life and memories of this good and kind man. We regret being unable to be with you in person however, you know why that isnít possible. May God Bless and comfort each of you.

Elaine and family. So sorry to hear of Marvin's passing. I so enjoyed the times he stopped in the bank and I got to visit with him. Marvin was a very kind person. Prayers to your family.
