Shirley Jean Marken


December 14, 1934 - September 15, 2013



Shirley Jean Marken was born December 14, 1934 on the farm near Alexandria, SD to Franklin and Alma (Hasselbring) Phelps.  She grew up and attended school at Bridgewater, graduating from Bridgewater High School in 1952. On January 4, 1956 she married Richard “Dick” Marken at Bridgewater.  They made their home in Bridgewater until moving to Mitchell July 1, 1977.  Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher for many years. She was a 4-H Leader for over twenty-five years.

She is survived by her husband, Dick, six children: Nancy Hinks-Van Wyhe, Sioux Falls; Denise (Rick) Lee, Sioux Falls; Lisa Griffith, Mitchell; Bill (Paula) Marken, Mitchell; Susan Northrup, Sioux City, IA and Christy (Terry) Wesseling, Mount Vernon; one sister, Darlene (Leon) Freeburg, Janesville, WI; fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons-in-law, John Hinks and Conley Van Wyhe..

I am so sorry Christy about the loss of your mom. She truly was a gem. Always making me feel welcome the hundreds of times I came to your house when we were teenagers. She treated me like family. I will be praying for you during this difficult time
