Floyd Warren Reed


April 28, 1921 - August 12, 2012




Floyd Warren Reed was born April 28, 1921 at Glencoe, OK to Thomas B, and Amy Lenore (Hite) Reed. He attended school and graduated from Glencoe, OK High School.   In July 1943, Floyd enlisted in the Merchant Marines. He received medals for action in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean areas. He was honorably discharged from Active Duty in November 1945. On August 30, 1952, Floyd married Rita Ruth Davis in Reno, NV.

Floyd served much of his life in volunteer service to his country. He worked as a Civil Defense Auxiliary Policeman in Los Angeles, CA.   In 1954,  Floyd and Rita moved to Pickstown, SD where Floyd worked for the Corps of Engineers as Shift Supervisor in the Control Room at Ft. Randall Power Plant from 1954-1979. Floyd served as Charles Mix County Emergency and Disaster Service Director for 23 yrs from 1956-1979. After retiring from the Corps of Engineers, Ft Randall Power Plant in 1979, he and his wife Rita moved to Craig, CO where he was employed by the Colorado-Ute Electric Power Plant as the Safety and Training Officer from 1979-1984. After retiring and moving to Rochford, SD in 1984, Floyd and Rita became volunteer weather observers for the US Weather Service for 12 yrs.

Floyd loved spending time with his family camping, hunting, and snowmobiling.

He was a member of the VFW Post 2750, Mitchell, SD; American Legion Post 18, Mitchell, SD; American Legion Post 282, Pickstown, SD, Little White Church, Hill City, SD and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Survivors include his wife Rita; sons William “Bill” (Mary) Reed, Gillette, WY; and Jeff Reed, Grand Junction, CO; daughters: Pam (Delbert) Rippe and Marcia (Wade) More, Gillette, WY; a sister Doris Reed, Columbus, OH; 6 grandsons and 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son David at birth; granddaughter Jenny Reed, and grandson Kevin Rippe; two sisters, Audrey Reeder, and Helen Posey,  OK, three brothers-in-law James Posey, Leslie Davis and Donald Davis also of Oklahoma.

We were so sorry to hear about Floyd. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We think of you often from our days up in Rochford, what happy times those were. The kids still talk about when you celebrated your anniversary with a Chivalry going down the hill. Floyd will always be remembered.
