Alice Marie Schmidt

June 1, 1925 - March 23, 2012

Alice Marie Schmidt was born June 1, 1925 on the family farm north of Tripp, SD to George and Lucille (Rick) Heisinger.  She attended country school, then Sacred Heart Catholic School, graduated from Parkston High School and then received her Teaching Certificate from Notre Dame Academy.  She taught in the Frier School District for two years. On May 7, 1946 she married Herman Schmidt at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. Throughout her life she worked at Mtron, Ravens, the Good Samaritan Nursing Home and Golden Touch Assisted Living in Parkston. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and Mitchell Senior Citizens Center. Alice had a great desire to entertain and ensure the many friends and family around her were treated with that special hospitality that only she was known for. As a sports enthusiast she would never miss the excitement of her grandchildren’s games or events, granddaughters and grandsons alike. She was always there and always the biggest fan. Those who knew Alice were touched by the showering of good wishes through the many cards she sent. She never missed a birthday, anniversary or opportunity to express her sympathy. Her faith was unwavering. Many people, most of them familiar to her, but some who were not, benefitted from her daily prayers.

She is survived by five daughters: Jean (Melvin) Freeman, Ethan, Joyce (John) Metz, Janette (Dave) Huber, JoAnn (Ken) Schlimgen, Mitchell; June Schmidt, Phoenix, AZ; two sons: Joel (Lori) Schmidt, Mitchell, Jerome Schmidt, Parkston; daughter-in-law, DeAnn Schmidt, Mitchell; seventeen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Ethel Gramm, Mitchell; Lorraine (Wendell) McNeely, Yankton and sister-in-law, Adeline (Jim) Oberembt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Jim, brother, Edward and sister-in-law, Margaret Heisinger and brother-in-law, Merlin Gramm.

Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on. Cherished memories never fade, because one loved is gone. Those we Love can never be, more than a than a thought apart, for as long as there’s a memory, they live on in our heart.
JoAnn - Keeping you lifted in prayer, Nancy

De JoAnn
I hold you in my heart and prayers today. I read your mother's obituary which spoke so highly of her hospitality and thought how like her you are! Peace, Sheila

My wonderful Schmidt cousins
We have lost another dear family member. Even though Aunt Alice's appearance had changed in the last 6 months, this picture is how we will always remember her - with that beautiful smile of hers. We have so many wonderful memories of growing up close to our cousins. Not even death can take away our memories. Your mom finally gets to be with her husband again, I can picture them all in Heaven playing cards already. God bless you all during this sad time. Love you.
