John David Orr


December 9, 1928 - February 27, 2012



Dr. John D. Orr was born in Corsica, SD on December 9, 1928 to Solon and Jennie Orr.  The Orr family moved to the Mitchell area in 1942.  John received a B.S. from Dakota Wesleyan University, an M.S. from South Dakota State University and an Ed.D from University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  A lifelong educator and agricultural conservationist, John was the recipient of the Nebraska Extension Wildlife award by the Nebraska Cooperative Extension Association in 1980.  He also led 4-H, Rural Youth and International Youth Exchange programs in both SD and NE.  John retired from the Nebraska Agricultural Cooperative Extension at UNL in 1988.  In retirement he actively developed wildlife habitat in both SD and NE.  While living in Geddes he hosted school classes at his wild life sanctuary near Geddes. He instilled the love of learning in each of his children and grandchildren and fostered a love of outdoor education.  In 2003 he married Bonnie Martin Eberhard. 

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Eberhard-Orr, Mitchell; son, John D. Orr (Marilyn), Cincinnati, OH; three daughters: Cheryle Christine Orr-Paglialonga (Lou), Atascadero, CA; Cynthia Gayle Parrott (Doug), Omaha, NE; and Rebecca Ann Resinger (Nick), Seward, NE; sister, Edis Anderson, Vermillion; 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and former wife, Clarice Carlson-Orr, Lincoln NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Lois DeRoos and Oral Orr, brothers: Dean, Lee and J Allen Orr.


In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nebraska 4-H Foundation or Jennie Orr and John Orr Scholarship fund at Dakota Wesleyan University are appreciated.
