Gertrude Teresa "Gertrese" Steilen


July 30, 1930 - February 10, 2012



Gertrude Teresa (Gertrese) Effling was born to Joseph and Ellen (Healy) Effling on July 30, 1930 in rural Artesian in Sanborn County the third of nine children.  At the age of four she moved with her family to rural Manchester in Kingsbury County where she attended Rosedale Healy Country School.  The family then moved back to Sanborn County where she attended Afton NO. 4 Country School.  She graduated from St. Agatha Catholic High School in Howard, SD in 1948.
She enrolled in summer school at Notre Dame Jr. College in Mitchell, SD earning a Second Grade teaching certificate in 1948.  She taught country school for two years, and then worked at Newberry’s Department Store in Mitchell for four years.  On February 25, 1954, she married Edward Charles Steilen at St. Charles Catholic Church in Artesian.  They farmed together near Farmer until July, 1999, when they semi-retired and moved to Alexandria.  She moved to Avera Brady Assisted Living Facility in Mitchell in February, 2011.
She was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Farmer, later known as St. John Neuman Parish, where she also taught CCD for many years.  She was most recently a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church and Sacred Heart League in Alexandria.  She was a life-time member of the Fulton, Farmer and Epiphany American Legion Auxiliary.  She held offices in both the Altar Society and the Legion Auxiliary.  
During her stay at Avera Brady Assisted Living in Mitchell, she was involved in making several rosaries for various missions around the world and  South Dakota troops in Afghanistan.
She is survived by eight children:  Dolores Steilen, Sioux Falls, SD, Thomas (Kim) Steilen, Gary (Brenda) Steilen, Marlene Warnke, Paul Steilen and Carol Steilen all of Alexandria, SD, Diane (Leland) Nesheim of Ethan, SD and Marilyn (John) Carsten of Platte, SD; eleven grandchildren:  Joseph (Keri) Warnke, Jennifer (Neil) Waldera, Travis Steilen, Ashley Steilen, Brad Nesheim, Lisa Nesheim, Jared Nesheim, Heather Carsten, Shawn Carsten, Nicolas Steilen and Anthony Steilen; four great-grandchildren:  Keenan and Audrina Waldera and Camden and Callen Warnke; two sisters:  Irene Casanova of Ramona, SD and Betty (Daryl) Kurtenbach of Stevens Point, WI; four brothers:  Vincent (Esther) Effling, Francis (Cleo) Effling, Gregory (Sharon) Effling all of Artesian, SD and John (Shirley) Effling of Clear Lake, SD and two sisters-in-law:  Dorothy Brown of Spencer, SD and Julie Wagner of Mitchell, SD.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, a grandson, Randall Carsten, her parents, two sisters and two brothers-in-law.

I am thinking of you and am sending prayers. I have lots of very fond memories of Aunt Gert and am so sad to hear of her passing.
