Ervin Kruse

April 28, 1937 - November 26, 2020

Ervin Kruse, 83, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, November 26, 2020 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Ervin (Ernie) Kruse was born April 28, 1937 and grew up on a farm near Columbia with 2 sisters and 3 brothers. He went to school and graduated from Columbia High School. He attended SDSU for 1 year then transferred to Northern College where he later graduated with an education degree. He taught at Claremont then finished his teaching career in Langford. He was a well-respected math teacher and coach. He coached track and basketball at times during his 40 year career.

During his retirement years he enjoyed playing cards and horseracing. He moved to Mitchell this fall as his health was failing to be close to family.

Although he never married, he enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and nephews at family gatherings.

Ernie is survived by his brother, Robert (Kathy) Kruse; sister-in-law, Darlys Kruse; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillian Kruse; sisters, Arlene Weismantel and Doris Smith; and 2 brothers, Harley and Willis Kruse.

In lieu of flowers the family is setting up a scholarship fund for a Langford High School Student who chooses a teaching career. Donations can be made at any Dacotah Bank location under the ERNIE KRUSE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

Ernie was a fun uncle at Christmas gatherings as he was always willing to play any game that us kids brought along! He was also an amazing card player as he could stand behind someone for a couple of hands, watch how they played, and then become their partner and win the majority of the time!
