Karen Jean Bauer, daughter of Carl and Lula (Johnson) Bauer, was born July 27, 1944 in Spencer, SD. She was the 11th of 15 siblings and the last one to be born at home. She attended school in her hometown of Spencer and when the family moved to Mitchell, she attended Notre Dame School.

On December 21, 1960, she married Milo Hansen. They made their home in Mitchell and had lived in the same house for the past 57 years. Over the years, they welcomed and raised four children with Karen devoting herself to home and family. She also worked in the community at The Methodist Hospital, Sunshine Food Store, Brady Nursing Home, and Home Health Care.

Karen and Milo enjoyed traveling around the Midwest, supported the Legion with Saturday night suppers, and enjoyed playing card games with family.  Karen especially loved spending time with her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent countless hours cooking, playing house, playing school, and anything else to make them feel loved and special.

Karen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for 60 years and her faith was extremely important to her. She was the most kind-hearted person that made everyone feel welcome and loved.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Brenda (Bryan) Moore, Lynda (Duane) Robideau, and Milo (Lorie) Hansen, all of Mitchell, SD; 9 grandchildren: Nicole Robideau, Wayne Robideau, Seth Hauge, Max (Katrina) Hauge, Marie (Mike) Mickelson, Lee Hauge, Dylan Hansen, Aly Hansen, and Riley Hansen; 10 great grand-children: Caleb, Connor, Jonas, Stella, Kynley, Hunter, Ellie, Mason, Isaac, and Emerson; siblings: Dorothy Wagner, Spencer, SD, Shirley (Cletus) Heumiller, Salem, SD, Virginia (Arnold) Eldeen, Mitchell, SD, Carla (Barry) Eldeen, Apple Valley, MN, Alvin (Darla) Bauer, Norfolk, NE, and James (Mary) Bauer, Salem, SD; sisters-in-law: Audrey Bauer, Mitchell, Sharon Bauer, Champlin, MN, and Selma Bauer, Larchwood, IA; and an abundance of nieces and nephews that she loved.

I saw a luminary lit this week in memory of Karen. It was displayed with love and peace during this Christmas season. After reading the beautiful description of a life well-lived in God's grace, the real light will never go out. I was blessed by the kind hearted person that lit the candle in her memory. I am sorry for your loss, and I have said a special prayer for comfort to your family.

I am Karen's niece. When very young, grade school age, we played together. My dad, Delbert, was one of her older brothers. Karen was always special. And we never saw her where she didn't have that welcoming smile. Unfortunately, with large families, opportunities to gather are much too seldom. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to you all. May God comfort you during this time of loss of this loving woman.
