John Dale Roeder, 70, of Mitchell SD, passed away on November 12, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital, from complications of COVID-19. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, November 23, 2020 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 1-3:00 PM Sunday, November 22 at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 3:00 PM Scripture Service.

John was born June 16, 1950 to Clarence & Wilhelmine (Mayer) Roeder in Mitchell, SD and was the youngest of 4 siblings. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1968. John enlisted into the U.S. Airforce in 1968 as an Aircraft Mechanic and was honorably discharged in 1974. He then attended college at Springfield, SD. John was united in marriage to Mary (Young) on May 28, 1976 in Mitchell SD at Holy Family Catholic Church.
John worked as a bartender for several establishments in Mitchell, Parkston, & Springfield, SD. He was a carpenter for United Building Center, and then furthered his career with Johnson’s Furniture. He also worked in maintenance at Holy Family Catholic Church and School. He continued his career in the insurance field with his brother, Bill Roeder at General Adjustment Bureau, and then with American Family Insurance. He also worked for the City of Mitchell as Parks Supervisor, and finished his career with Farmers Mutual Hail, where he retired at the age of 63. After retirement, he enjoyed driving truck for Bannwarth Farms and being part of the pit crew for Hauser Racing Team.
During his lifetime he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. John also belonged to the American Legion, State Amateur Baseball Association, Ducks Unlimited, Quarterback Club, DWU Team Makers, Pheasants Forever, Moose Lodge, and was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
John thoroughly enjoyed watching his kids & grandkids in the many different sports and activities they were involved in. He was a regular for coffee at Daylight Donuts and Cubby’s gas station. He enjoyed trying his luck at Platinum Players Club and Sudz Casino. He was a loyal Mitchell High School fan, Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan and always tried to catch a game when he would go visit his son in Minnesota. John also enjoyed his garden, his lawn, and hunting with his grandkids. John was a bit of a chef and would like to bake pies, can vegetables from his garden, and make candy during the holidays. He also entered various contest with friends for grilling/BBQ.
John is survived by his wife Mary (Young) Roeder & their dog Covie, daughter Lisa (Jeremy) Puetz of Mitchell SD, son Justin (Anne) Roeder of New Brighton MN, and son Alex (Kayla) Roeder of Bismarck ND. His 8 grandchildren, Meghan, Jacey, Tanner, Deyton & Easton Puetz. Adalynn Roeder. And Brynleigh and Brantley Roeder. His first great granddaughter, Ayva, was born the day after his death. He is also survived by his brother Alvin & (Gayle) Roeder, sister Shirley Brown, sister-in-law Ruth Wolfer, brother-in-law David (Vicki) Young, and sister-in-law Joyce Berg. Also, near and dear to his heart where numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William, father-in-law and mother-in-law Sylvester & Florence Young, brother-in-law Robert Brown, brother-in-law Francis Young, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
