Loyd Eugene Oleson was born April 14, 1924 to Fred and Minnie (House) Oleson on a farm near Faulkton, SD. He grew up in the Faulkton area and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1942. He married Maxine Joyce Eaton in Orient, SD on April 14, 1947 on his birthday and afterward he jokingly said, “I never had another birthday”! They celebrated 72 years together in 2019.

He began his 42-year career with rural electric cooperatives in November of 1947 when he joined Spink Electric in Redfield, SD. In 1957 he moved to Mitchell and began his career at Intercounty Electric as office manager. He served as manager of Intercounty from 1978 until his retirement 1989. His career in rural electricity saw him help oversee the lighting of rural America.

When Loyd was 11, his parents gave him an accordion after noticing his musical talent. His musical talent was shared by many over a period of 75 years and culminated with his induction into the Dakota Musicians Association Hall of Fame in 1995. Most of his musical career was with the Harry Eisele Orchestra and Swede Pierson’s Rhythm Masters. In later years, he entertained at long-term care facilities and senior citizen centers.

He was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a 50-years member of Mitchell Toastmasters, the Mitchell Elks Lodge and Mitchell Rotary Club.

He is survived by his children, Stephanie (Tom) Long, Sioux Falls; Doug (Carol) Oleson, Colorado Springs, CO; Tim (Tami Keller) Oleson, Lewiston, ID; Pat (Sandy) Oleson, Mitchell; Mary (Randy) Weiss, Liberty, MO; Alan (Sara) Oleson, Omaha, NE; and Mark (Anna) Oleson, Reno, NV. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren

Loyd was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, on December 7, 2019. Also preceding him were his parents, five brothers, and a sister.

Loyd was the GM of Intercounty Electric when I started what turned out to be my working career there. Alwayes enjoyed channing with Loyd. He would stop by my office on a regular basis to chat and ask me about my golf game. After Loyd retired and I would run into him and Maxine out dining, he alwayes wanted to chat for awhile to catch up with what was happening in my life and golf game of course. From my interactions with Loyd over the years, He lived a long, happy life. My condolences to his family.

To the Family of Loyd Oleson. Vicki and I have so many beautiful memories of Loyd and Maxine hosting our rural electric Cooperative Christmas get togethers at their home socializing, signing and then out for supper over the past 35 years! Loyd was a very special man and had skills in his management style, accounting, with his family and of course music!! He will certainly be missed but the Good Lord called home a Great Man and music is flowing in heaven with another Child of God playing! Our thoughts and prayers are with all the Oleson Family!!!
