Beth Walz, 39, of Mitchell, SD, died Friday, May 22, 2020 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 27 at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Beth Ann Walz was born on January 27, 1981 in Deadwood, SD to Kenneth and Sharon (Parker) Albernathy. She graduated from Believers Fellowship School in Sturgis in 1998.

Beth loved thinking of fun ways to teach and entertain children as Librarian at the Plankinton Public Library. Her most recent position as a paraeducator at Mitchell High School brought her joy, and was her favorite position of her career.

Beth was a loving mother, sister, cousin, and friend to everyone she met.

Beth is survived by her precious daughter, Tessa Lynn Walz; mother, Sharon Abernathy; brothers, Edward Merchen and Loren Abernathy; sisters, Rachel Woelfel, Diana Lipford, and Yvonne Holter; nephews and nieces, Thomas and Haley Merchen, Casey, Hayden, and Chance Overland, Duncan Woelfel, Philip and Andrea Abernathy, and Scott Holter; as well as numerous beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Leo Abernathy; grandmothers, Olive Parker and Florence Lynch; and aunt Sheila Merchen.

I'm a teacher at Mitchell High School. I did not know Beth very well because she did not work in my classroom, but she was always kind and friendly whenever I would see her around the school. I know she will be missed by the students and staff she worked with. Thoughts and prayers for her family and friends.

Our hearts are broken but memories of Beth remain. She was a funny, bright, wonderful person and we will miss her dearly. Our prayers and thoughts are being sent to everyone in Beth’s life. She will be missed by many and thought of often.

So many of us at school were shocked and very saddened to hear of Beth's death. She was such an upbeat, positive person and a joy to work and interact with. We will miss her very much.

So sorry to hear of Beth's passing. I worked in the Mitchell High School special education department with Beth. She was always so helpful and will be missed. My condolences to her family.
