Wayne Keizer

July 10, 1945 - April 30, 2020

Wayne Keizer, 74, of Stickney, SD, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 30, 2020 at his home under hospice care in Stickney.  Funeral services are pending under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Wayne Allen was born to Fred and Elsie (Winkelhaus) Keizer on July 10, 1945.  The youngest of four siblings, he may have been a bit doted on.  Wayne grew up on the family farm while attending Pleasant Lake grade school and Stickney high school.  After graduating in 1963, he worked at the Stickney elevator also moving haystacks in the winter.

On August 22, 1965 Wayne married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Horst.  They started their life together in Pierre, SD where he worked for Western Airlines.  In 1966, he transferred to Sioux Falls where he continued to work for the airlines, and later working as a driver for Serv-all.  They would enjoy motorcycle rides after their work shifts.  Finally, in March of ’69, he could no longer resist what he believed to be his true calling, and moved back to the family farm.   Whether working in the fields or with the hogs or cattle, he still found time to have some family fun.  Many memories were made on camping trips in the summer or snowmobile rides in the winter.  He was honored at the SD State fair, receiving the quasqui-centennial family farm award.

In 1986, Wayne added being an independent trucker to his job title.  The 80’s weren’t the most kind to farmers and this was one way he could help supplement the farm.  He hauled eggs mostly to Colorado and a few trips to Iowa.  In 1997, he became an employee of National Foods, hauling eggs for them, mainly to Billings, MT.  In 2011, he retired having earned an award as a driver.

Over the years, Wayne served on the township board, the ASC county board, Stickney school board, and St. Paul Lutheran church council.  His hobby of participating in tractor pull brought enjoyment to the whole family.  He also obtained his pilot’s license in 1976 fulfilling his passion for flying.

Grateful for sharing the life of a husband/father/grandfather with such strong family values are his wife, Shirley, of nearly 55 years; children, Tonya (Jeff) Zinter, Frederick, SD, Lance (Melanie) Keizer, Stickney, SD, and Forrest (Kristy) Keizer, Glenrock, WY; grandchildren, Caitlin (Steve) Beckman, Chelsey (Christopher) Plamp, Hattie Zinter, Logan, Haley, and Cody Keizer, Gracie, Zane, and Luke Keizer; step-grandchildren, Jerika O’Neal and Corbin (Aubrie) Crim; great-grandchildren Brynlee, Cohen, Huxley, Truett, Cale, and Chancy; and 3 step great-grandchildren, Keturah, Grace, Esmee.  He is also survived by his brother, Willard (Dar) Keizer, Sioux Falls; sister, Ruth Brink, Dallas, TX; sisters-in-law, Ardyce Struss, Joan Zeisler; brother-in-law, Leonard Thomas; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Welcoming into their heavenly arms are his parents; sister, Florence Gill, brother in law, Erwin Brink;   step-granddaughter, Carmen Swartwout; and a great-grandson, Samuel Plamp.
