Vera May

November 13, 1936 - March 27, 2020

Vera May, 83, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Friday, March 27, 2020 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.  A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian.

Vera Denice May was born in Artesian, SD to Wayne and Lou (Gaston) Peer on November 13, 1936. She attended school in Artesian, graduating in 1954. She married the love of her life, Al May, on June 28, 1954 in Artesian. They made their home in Artesian for many years, raising their family and enjoying life. In 1988, they moved to Canton and then in 1997, after Al passed, Vera moved to Lake Madison. In 2001 she moved to Mitchell.

Vera loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, motorcycling, and camping with her family. Making memories was one of her favorite past-times. Vera was always busy raising dogs, she was an avid animal lover. She loved tending to her yard, and everyone knew the pride she put into making it look ‘picture perfect’. She was, also, a big Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. Vera always enjoyed the SD pheasant opener, when her old friends from Oklahoma came, she always looked forward to their company. Vera enjoyed going to her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s activities. She often mentioned how much she enjoyed watching her grandkids grow up, and that she’d never dreamed she’d be a great-grandma to 28! Vera loved her family very much and enjoyed spending time with them!

Vera is survived by her daughter, Connie (Dan) Muller, Fedora; sons, Terry (Connie) May, Sioux Falls, Danny (Renee) May, Hartford; grandchildren, Amy (Phil) Kempf, Ashley (Kevin) Schwader, Jason (Katie) Muller, Kayla (Jeff) Tommeraasen, Andrea (Devin) Paulsen, Danielle (Joseph) May-Robertson, Amanda (Adam) Claflin, Chase (Carly) May, Megan (Kyle) Broderson; great-grandchildren, Macy, Maddie, and Mason Kempf, Keegan, Kayleigh, and Aiden Schwader, Riley, Molly, Jaxon, Caleb, and Brody Muller, Landyn, Emilee, and Eastyn Tommeraasen, Kadyn and McKenzy Paulsen, Kameryn, Brooklyn, Jazmyne, and Tiahlyn Robertson, Acelee and Azalea Claflin, Jaxon, Talen, Cambrie, and baby May, Kayl and Morgan Broderson; siblings, Warren Peer, Donna (Cliff) Glanzer, Beverly Wire; sister in law, Eleanor Shoemaker; and many nieces and nephews.

Vera is preceded in death by her husband, Al; sons, Gary and Timmy; sister, Norma Heidinger; brother, LaVern Peer; and her loving parents.

Vera was a treasure and will remain so. About 5 years ago I and my mother contacted Vera and paid a couple visits to learn some family histery pertaining to the Geest family. Her mother in-law Dora was a younger sister to my Great Grandmother who passed in 1922. If it wasn't for Vera, my ability to assemble the family tree would have been much slower. So glad to have had to meet such a wonderful woman. So sorry for your loss. She is in good hands now and no more ailments to hinder her. Bless you all!!

Vera was our link to the Peer cousins in South Dakota. When Harlan was alive and we drove to S. Dak. to see family we would stop in Mitchell to have breakfast or lunch with Vera, other Peer cousins and Joan Gaston. We had lots of laughs retelling old family stories and adding some new ones. Over the years we had many enjoyable long distance phone calls. After Harlan passed away in 2019 Vera and I continued to phone each other. She was a dear person to our family. She will be missed by so many people. Many thoughts and prayers to all of the families.
