Hilde Jerke, 101, of Mitchell, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Edgewood Assisted Living in Mitchell. A private, family graveside service will be held followed by Hilde’s Celebration of Life. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Hilde Gertrude Jerke was born on November 6, 1918 in Germany, to Paul and Marie (Gergelin) Huhnke. In 1948, Hilde came to the U.S. and married Edmund Jerke (Tripp, SD). She and Edmund built their home and family in Mitchell, SD. Hilde dedicated her life to the loving care of her husband and their 4 children.
Hilde was the definition of an expert homemaker. She had a deep love for cooking special German dishes and daily baking. She filled her days with her favorite things including sewing, gardening, and nurturing her favorite flowers. When she needed to relax, she would sit and knit or crochet for hours. Hilde’s grandchildren brought her sheer joy! They would visit and delight in playing a fierce competitive game of Mühle (a German board game) with her. Each grandchild knew whenever they visited, they could search for treasures in her basement and their dear grandma would always let them take home a little something special to remind them of their time there. Hilde lived such a long prosperous life that she also got to be a part of her great grandchildren’s lives. They affectionately called her Oma. Even into her last months, Oma would listen to their stories about their school and activities, and beam with pride. At the end of every visit, she would say a special prayer over each one of them. Each of them a blessing to her and she to them. Her generosity was immeasurable, her door and kitchen table always open, and her genuine care and concern for others was evident every day of her life.
Hilde is survived by her four children, Alice (Michael) Clapham, AZ; Robert (Terry) Jerke, MN; Terry Jerke, CA; Thomas (Diana) Jerke, SD; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one step granddaughter; sister-in-law, Anneliese; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Hilde is preceded in death by her husband, Edmund Jerke, her parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
Our family would like to send our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the loving, kind, and caring staff of Crystal Manor Independent Care Facility and Edgewood Assisting Living.
