James Heiter


April 20, 1932 - March 21, 2020


James Heiter, 87, of Alexandria, SD, died Saturday, March 21, 2020 in the comfort of his home.  A private, family funeral mass will be held.  Burial will be in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in De Smet, SD.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

James "Jim" Joseph Heiter was born April 20th, 1932 in Emery, SD to Edward and Agnus Heiter. He was called to duty for the Korean War from 1952-1954. After returning from his deployment he married his love, Helen Peckenpaugh, on April 16th, 1955.

James was an avid gardener and farmer. His enjoyment was at its fullest when he had the opportunity to spend time with his family. Whether it was hunting with family, passing down his love for golf through three generations, or simply spending a weekend with all of his children and grandchildren, those were the times he treasured most. His smile, laughter, and humor will be missed.

James is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Sandy (Mark) Webb of Des Moines, IA, Bruce (Tambi) Heiter of Bondurant, IA, Michael (Debra) Heiter of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Bridget (Brian) Gilbertson, Jason Heiter, Travis (Lindsay) Heiter, Andrea (John) Benson, Kiley Jo (Ethan) Noble, Jordyn (Austin) Wiser, and Megan Heiter; great-grandchildren, Eyan Anderson, Al Ludwig, Finn, Carsyn, and Charolette Gilbertson, Paityn and Charley Heiter, Silas and Sterling Webb, Braxten and Kinnick Noble, Bennett Wiser, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Agnus; brother, Gene; sister-in-law, Connie, and nephew, Dan.
