Norman Thuringer, 88, of Mitchell, died Monday, December 30, 2019 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Parkston. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday, January 6, at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Norman Leo Thuringer was born on April 11, 1931, to William and Emma (Weber) Thuringer, in Ethan, SD. He grew up and attended school in Parkston. He helped on the family farm before entering into the US Army on January 15, 1953. He served in the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in December 30, 1954. Norman was united in marriage to Mary Fahy on October 27, 1953 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Emery, SD.
Norman farmed West of Parkston from 1955 until his retirement in 1994. Norman and Mary then moved to Mitchell where Norman worked for the Mitchell Traffic Department from 1995 to 2006. He then volunteered at Queen of Peace Hospital and the Mitchell RSVP Patrol for several years.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the James Valley Community Center, and the Korean War Veterans.
Norman is survived by his children, Michael (Brenda) Thuringer, Sioux Falls, Sandie (Jim) Larsen, Lakewood, WA, and Bryan (Janet) Thuringer, Mitchell; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Betty Roth, Parkston, Marjo Vilhauer, Parkston, and Ralph Thuringer, Parkston; and siblings-in-law, Bob (Iris) Fahy, Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, Bill (Margie) Fahy, Brandon, SD, Rita Wren, Minneapolis, MN, and Jim Horstman, Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Thuringer, on August 16, 2018, siblings, Carola Thuringer, Luverne (Lois) Thuringer, and Jean Horstman; and brothers-in-law, Albin Roth and Stanley Vilhauer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell.
