Obituary

Mark Lee Budahl, 64, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, November 14, 2019, at his home.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 22, 2019 at Downtown First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Thursday at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Mark Lee Budahl was born September 14, 1955 in Clay County, Texas to Leon and Barbara (Peterson) Budahl. He graduated from Madison High School, in Madison, SD in 1973. In 1977 he received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education from Dakota State University, Madison, SD and later received his Master of Arts in Mathematics from University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD. On June 18, 1977 he married Kathleen Baldwin in Mitchell, SD.

For 35 years, he taught all levels of Math and influenced thousands of students. His students remember him as a brilliant, loving and meticulous teacher- grading students to the eighth of a point to make sure they received credit for as much as they could do. He was awarded as “Teacher of the Year” for Mitchell School District in 1987-88, 1988-89, and 1991-92. In 2006  he was awarded “Carl Springer Outstanding Educator”- an award given in recognition of outstanding contributions to the scholastic and leadership of Mitchell rotary scholars. As an educator he also worked as an author consultant in Chicago, IL writing mathematics books. If Mark wasn’t correcting papers, you could always find him on the greens of the golf course. His years of coaching golf for the Mitchell High School were remembered by the lifelong friendships made on the green and in the club house.

His greatest joys were his children, Katie and Andee. He spent hours and hours travelling to swim meets across the country. He loved watching Katie and Andee succeed in the sport of swimming.  He was their biggest fan always dressed in team gear head to toe. Of all the people he touched, his proudest moments were his grandchildren Ryan and Annie. He captured their love of life in so many pictures.

Mark was a golf fanatic, Minnesota Twins lover, music encyclopedia and always the joke teller at any party. The way he passed is just the way he lived: he wrote his own rules, fought every battle and was given so many chances to enjoy his family and friends until November 14, 2019.

His family would like to thank the Mitchell Davita dialysis staff who took great care of him his final years of living.

He is survived by his wife Kathy Budahl, Mitchell; daughters, Katie Price (Patrick Norman), Lawrence, KS, and Andee (Tyler) Webb, Lakeville, MN; grandchildren, Ryan Price and Annie Norman; brother, Gary (Maureen) Budahl, Fallon, NV; and mother-in-law, Gladys Ann Baldwin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Barbara Budahl, and father-in-law, Kenneth E. Baldwin.

So sorry to hear of the passing of my former colleague, Mark Budahl. I had the pleasure of working with Mark at Mitchell High School for 13 years and remember his smile and positive attitude. He cared deeply about his students and made every effort to help them learn. I am happy Mark and I reconnected on Facebook about six years ago where we could share in our love for golf and the Minnesota Twins. Facebook was also a great way to share family events and it was clear Mark loved his family dearly and loved spending time with them. My deepest sympathies to all of you.

Mark was a great teacher, I had him several times in high school in Chamberlain and always enjoyed learning from him!

I always thought that what made Mark a great teacher and coach was his ability to love and care about his students. He had such great influence because he accepted people and enjoyed them. My sympathy to Kathy and the family. Mark will be missed by so many people.

So much history with Mark and his family. One of the first people we met when we moved to Mitchell back in the early 80s. He was a golf partner, fellow swim parent, fellow girls basketball parent, a teacher to my kids but most important, a respected and good friend
I wish we could be there to share some great stories.

I met Mark, while teaching and coaching at Chamberlain. We found a connection, and he was literally my best buddy, while in Chamberlain His nickname for me, was the "weasel", on the golf course. We had so many good times together. I have so many Great memories of Marko. Vanya Con Dios, my good friend

When I was 40, Mark tutored me through my college math classes which I never would've gotten through without him. It is so sad for your family to lose such a kind, supportive, loving man at this relatively young age. My prayers are with Kathy and your family in the coming days and I hope that good memories will provide some comfort.

Mark had a stroke. He did dialysis three times a week. He still kicked my butt every time we played golf. I shall miss the beatings.

I am sorry to hear the news. He was one of my most favorite teachers from high school and I only had two favorite teachers. He helped me understand Algebra in 9th grade and made it fun. I was FB friends with him and was happy to see photos of all of the golf courses he was able to play. He touched so many lives in a great way. I am so sad. 😔

Sending my love to Kathy and the girls as they mourn the loss of a loving man. Mr. Budhal was my 7th grade Algebra teacher but I got to know him better when he and his little family moved in across the street. Once I graduated HS he told me I could call him Mark but I never could. I always felt he deserved the respect. He was a great neighbor to my mother. Taking his snowblower over to clean her sidewalk and driveway during periods of bad snow (when I was at college) and I will never forget the morning I came running out of my house, blood everywhere when we thought my nephew had cut my finger tip off when he accidentally slammed my finger in the door. Mr Budhal helped calm me down and helped with first aid until parents got home. I am now and always will be grateful for all he did for our family. I wish I had told him that more often. He was a great man and I know he will be missed.

I had Mr budahl for math. It was my biggest struggle. I spent many hours with him trying to figure it all out. The one on one time got me threw math.
He was also my best friends study hall teacher and I was there everyday. he was a joy to be around.
Thanks for making high school bareable. ❤️❤️

I will always have his sweet kind loving heart that guided me and cared about me to remind me of what kind of person to try to be. Both mark and kathy both were inspirations to me as teachers. They were a great team. I am wrapping my internet arms around you both..

Mr Budahl was one of the greatest, if not the greatest teacher I ever had. No matter how many times I wanted to give up, he would never let me. His biggest goal I thought was to see every one of his students succeed. He'll be missed by all his former students

Mr. Budahl was a wonderful math teacher. I did poorly on my first test in Sr. Math in 1980. He called me in to tell me not to give up because he saw i was disappointed. I cried. He made me feel like i could do it and I couldn't let him down. I believe I am a math teacher today because of him. Keep scrolling math problems on your overhead in heaven. Prayers for Kathy and the family. I am sorry for your loss.

Oh Mark my friend....I knew you had fought a tough battle. You made math fun for me and I’m not a math person at all! I’m so glad I got to reconnect with you the past few years. I enjoyed our visits when you would come to grab some of my super hot salsa for your girls. I know they and your grandchildren were the light of your life. I know you’re already playing a few rounds of golf up there and I’m sure you’re under par every time! Peace and love to you Kathy, Katie, Andee and family. I will miss you very much!!

Mr Budahl was the first math teacher to make me feel good about myself and capable of “getting it”, even though math was a struggle for me. He was so kind and patient. His Stats and Probability class ended up being one of my favorites in high school. My sympathies go out to his wife and daughters.
