Donald Letcher, 82, Bridgewater, SD died Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at his home under the care of Avera @ Home Hospice.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, April 5 at the Zion Mennonite Church in Bridgewater. Burial with military honors will be in the Bridgewater Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 pm Thursday at the church in Bridgewater. Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.
Donald LeRoy Letcher was born April 30, 1936 south of Alexandria at the family farm to LeRoy and Henrietta (Tammen) Letcher. He grew up attending country school and then worked on the dam at Yankton and John Morrell in Sioux Falls. He joined the US Navy in 1956 and served in the Philippines and Okinawa on the ships, USS Horrett and USS Lexington. He was honorably discharged in Milton, FL in August 1966. On July 14, 1961 he married Deloris Jean Koch. In August 1966 they moved to Freeman where he was employed by Fred Harr & Co in Freeman, Janssen Implement in Emery and Sievers Sales & Service Farm Equipment in Bridgewater. In 1974 they moved to a farm near Emery where he also farmed and milked cows until health forced him to retire from farming in 1991. They moved to Bridgewater where Don continued working for Sievers Sales & Service until 2017.
Left to cherish his memory are his five children: Terri (Jamie) Shape of Bridgewater, Tony (Eli Mae) Letcher of Epiphany, Angie (Cris) Sizer of Bridgewater, Todd (Jill) Letcher of Bridgewater, April (Chad) Mosley of Sioux Falls, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, one sister, Eileen (Kenny) Radel of Sioux Falls, three sisters-in-law: Carol Letcher of Kearney, NE, Norma Letcher of Freeman and Lenora Webb of Lucasville, OH.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deloris, brothers, Lyle and Myron, brothers-in-law, Herb Webb, Dave Weaver and sister-in-law, Myra Weaver.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Avera @ Home Hospice, 1115 E. 5th St., Mitchell SD 57301.
