Arlene Schaeffer, 86 Mitchell, SD died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Friday, January 11 at the First Baptist Church in Emery, SD.  Burial will be in the Eureka Cemetery in Eureka, SD at 4:00 pm on Friday. Visitation will be from 6-7:00 pm Thursday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Arlene Schaeffer was born March 13, 1932 in Linton, ND to Henry and Amelia (Schmierer) Breckel. Her first eight years of schooling were in a rural country school and graduated from Linton High School in 1950. She received her teaching certificate from Ellendale State Normal and Industrial College. She taught in a rural school near Linton and then in the Bowdle and Redfield Public Schools. On June 23, 1957 she married Irwin (Bob) Schaeffer at the First Baptist Church in Linton. They made their home in Eureka, SD for over 32 years. In 1989 they moved to Mitchell, SD. Bob died on November 10, 1994. In May 2014 Arlene moved to be closer to her daughter Nona in Winner, SD. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Eureka and then the First Baptist Church in Emery.

She is survived by her three children: Noel Schaeffer of Sioux Falls, Nona (James) Meyer of Winner, Nora (Robert) Glim of Elk Grove, CA, seven grandchildren, one sister, Loretta Rau of Linton, ND and one brother, Gottlieb Breckel of Bismarck, ND.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, three sisters: Christine and Alvina Loebs, Lorraine Tschritter, three brothers: Otto, Edward and Calvin.
