Elsie Patzlaff, 91, of Mitchell formerly of Farmer died Saturday, December 08, 2018 at Firesteel Health Care Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, December 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. Burial will be at Spencer Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell with a 7:00pm prayer service.
Elsie M. Patzlaff was born April 15th, 1927 to Elmer and Amanda (Lienemann) Klinger at their home north of Fulton, SD. She started school when she was 4 years old and attended 8 years of grade school at Fairview #3. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1944. She was baptized at a rural church on April 22, 1928 and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church at Spencer, SD. She was employed at Fulton State Bank for 5 years.
On March 6, 1949 she married Gene Patzlaff at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Spencer, SD. They lived on the family farm northwest of Farmer, SD. She had been a member of the Fairview Community Club for many years. They continued to make St. Matthew’s their church home where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was Sunday School Superintendent and enjoyed the work of the women’s group, holding offices over the years and was able to do research for the 100th Anniversary book in 1997. She was financial secretary the last years until the tornado destroyed the church in 1998. They then transferred to First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. She moved her membership back to Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, SD.
She is survived by her four sons, Don (Dixie), Alexandria, SD, Larry, Mitchell, SD, Morris (Roxanne), Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff (Martha) Platte, SD; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty (Don) O’Neill, Fulton, SD and Mary (Courtney) Hall, Fulton, SD; brother-in-law Orval Patzlaff, Mitchell, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene in February 2008; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Verne Eilts; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Therman and Helen Patzlaff, Ken and Beth Patzlaff, Claude and Katherine Patzlaff, Robert and Florence Bertelson, and Barbara Patzlaff; and one great grandson, Caleb Michael Hockett.
